Introduction to Tufts University School of Medicine
Tufts University School of Medicine is situated in the center of Boston in the city’s vibrant Chinatown neighborhood. With easy access to transportation and all the amenities of a world-class city, students have a wide range of personal and professional opportunities. The innovative Maine Track is a unique educational program for students passionate about community-based and rural medicine. Tufts medical students spend their four years training to become skilled, ethical, and compassionate physicians who are prepared for the ever-evolving landscape of medicine. Tufts graduates go on to top-tier residencies and fulfilling medical careers with a commitment to provide humanistic healthcare for all, especially for underserved and vulnerable patient populations. They forge professional and personal relationships that last a lifetime.
The MD curriculum is designed to equip future physicians with the knowledge, skills, behaviors, and values to sustain their careers. Four “perspectives” are woven into the curriculum to hone these attributes: healthcare systems, population health, the patient experience, and personal and professional development. Students engage with highly experienced faculty who combine rigorous active learning with mentorship. All medical students are paired with a faculty coach who meets with them regularly for all four years, observes and assists in developing their clinical skills, helps them engage in self-reflection, and supports them in areas where they may need additional, tailored support. This model creates strong student-faculty relationships and the acquisition of essential skills for careers in medicine.
One of the principal teaching hospitals, Tufts Medical Center, is part of the Health Sciences campus, which includes Tufts’ medical, dental, biomedical, nutrition, and public health schools. Students also rotate at more than 20 clinical teaching sites across Massachusetts and New England, including Boston Children’s Hospital, major trauma centers, community and regional hospitals, and rural clinics. MD students can also participate in global health experiences in Ghana, Panama, India, and other countries around the world. All Tufts medical students complete 50 hours of community-engaged service through Tufts’ Community Service Learning program in affiliation with the Tisch College of Civic Life. With exposure to a wide range of healthcare settings and patient populations, Tufts medical students explore their passions and gain the experience needed to pursue their desired path.
Students describe the Tufts community as friendly, collaborative, inclusive, and diverse. Students are encouraged to balance their studies with activities that support their personal well-being, utilizing student support services such as physical and mental health support, academic support, and the Office of Student Wellness. There are a wide range of student organizations, clubs, interest groups, and opportunities to pursue personal interests and connections. The First Generation in Medicine (FGiM) group fosters connection and support among those who are first generation to study medicine. Read more about Tufts students' journeys.
