Outside funding can be used to reduce the work study offer. If the student can document travel costs that exceed the standard allowance, outside funding may be used to cover the documented travel costs. If the outside funding exceeds those two components, the excess will be used to reduce grants awarded to the student.
Health insurance is not included in the standard student expense budget. If the student cannot waive out of the Caltech Student Health Insurance Plan then they will receive an Institute Grant to cover their enrollment. The plan costs $5,049 for the 2025-2026 school year - $1,683 per insurance term.
Institute scholarship will only cover the standard travel allowance listed in the student's estimated cost of attendance.
The student contribution will be calculated based on total income and assets reported on the FAFSA.
Students must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress as defined by the Institute (see the Caltech Financial Aid website SAP policy).
All entering undergraduate students are charged a one-time $500 orientation fee.
Caltech only offers need-based financial aid and is committed to meeting the full demonstrated need of undergraduate students. Students with family incomes of less than $100,000 and assets of less than $100,000, will receive a no-loan aid package that covers tuition, fees, food, and housing.
Caltech's need-based financial aid is awarded on an annual basis, and Match Scholarship Recipients must re-apply for aid each year. Provided there is no significant change in a student's financial situation, financial aid awards should remain consistent year to year.
