SAT/ACT Test Preparation

SAT/ACT Test Preparation

Colleges don’t really have a preference for the SAT or the ACT. Generally, the ACT tends to be more popular in the Midwest, and the SAT in other regions of the country. You should check with colleges on your list to see if they have specific preferences, and to see what constitutes a good score at those schools. Take a look at our tips for scoring high on the SAT/ACT for more information on how to study for your exams.

If you take the SAT, you should also seriously consider taking additional SAT subject tests. The SAT subject tests are required by many colleges, and optional at some schools. Taking the SAT subject tests will provide you with options when you apply to college, and because these tests are subject specific, you’ll know what to study to do well for the exam.

Taking these tests will require some logistical and possibly financial planning ahead. You need to plan some time to study beforehand, make sure you don’t have other obligations, and also plan for payment for each exam. Fee waivers are often available to help cover the costs of these tests, but you need to obtain a fee waiver from your counselor, and may also need to submit your forms earlier through mail. Timing is everything in scheduling and taking your tests, so take a look at our guide on strategies for when to take your tests.
