ForrestP:
Have I missed anything?

RiceOwlJorge:
Type here :-p

cdi191:
i just got here too

RyanZ:
Hello! So I'm not really sure how this is supposed to work. Do we just start asking questions?

RiceOwlStephanie:
Hold on a minute

RiceOwlPhinga:
hi

RiceOwlJocelyn:
hi

RiceOwlAshley:
yo

RiceOwlStephanie:
Hello!

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
Hi everyone!

RiceOwlAdi:
Hey guys!

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
welcome!

ReginaL:
hey guys!

BrandonH3:
Hi!

RyanZ:
Hey

RiceOwlStephanie:
Anyone have any questions?

NathanielJ:
Hey

cdi191:
hi!!!

UchennaA:
Yeah I have a question

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
cool

RiceOwlStephanie:
Go

BrandonH3:
I really like the residential college system at Rice University that allows students to stay in the same college for all for years. In your experience at Rice has this system allowed you to bond closely with students in your college?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
go ahead

RiceOwlAdi:
Ok so my name is Adi Sirkes, I am a freshman at Rice

UchennaA:
How good is the engineering school at rice?

UchennaA:
is it better than the one at UT?

RiceOwlJocelyn:
definitely

RiceOwlJorge:
Hey Everyone, My name Is Jorge. In case you are wondering, we are all Questbridge students as well. If anyone has any specific questions about transfer credit, I've dealt with it a lot. Feel free to ask any questions.

NathanielJ:
How about NC State?

UchennaA:
Is that a "I'm a Rice student so I'm going to say it's better" answer or is it really better =)

RiceOwlAdi:
Brandon: Yes! We spend a lot of time with people in the same college during Orientation week so we get to know each other well

RiceOwlAdi:
lol

BrandonH3:
Besides O-Week, does the school offer any programs just for freshman to help them get acquainted with the school?

RiceOwlStephanie:
I love the residential system. having only been here for a week (I'm a freshman), I haven't experienced it fully yet, but I am looking forward. Thanks to our orientation program, I feel like I know a lot of the people in my college a lot better. I look forward to meeting everyone over the next four years.

RiceOwlJeff:
Hey, I'm Jeff, I'm an engineering major here at Rice. I think one of the advantages Rice has on larger schools like UT is that you get to work more closely with professors

RiceOwlJorge:
Freshmen definitely have lots of awesome stuff to do. For example there's freshmen flag football at the residential colleges

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
My name is Pin-Fang. I'm from the Houston area and am thinking about majoring in the social science field.

cdi191:
jorge how key is an sat score in getting into rice? assuming everything else is really good?? :) if u mind me asking, how well did u do?

BrandonH3:
Ah cool sounds great! :-)

UchennaA:
Are there a lot of engineer majors at rice?

RyanZ:
I have taken a Few classes at the University of Oregon and am planning to take a few more in the fall. Would I be able to transfer that credit that I have gotten?

RiceOwlAshley:
There are loads. It's one of the major programs here

RiceOwlAdi:
cdi well at this level most of the people have SAT scores around the same range so what really makes the difference are your essays

RiceOwlJorge:
I would say not to worry about it. Obviously if you're thinking about coming here you're in good shape. I would focus more on the essays.

RiceOwlStephanie:
Freshmen have lots of opportunities, but O-Week is the most intensive. After that, it's kind of up to you to get involved. There are several freshmen sports teams, and lots of other things great for freshmen wanting to get involved.

RiceOwlJeff:
There are a ton of engineers here at Rice, especially considering how close we are to the Texas Medical Center and BioEngineers look for research there

ShainaF:
Hello, I'm from Atlanta, Georgia...I plan on applying to Rice and majoring in engineering, can anyone tell me about the engineering program?

RiceOwlPhinga:
I know of chemical engineering, environmental, electrical

UchennaA:
They have civil engineering too right?

AngelaT4:
Hello everyone! I am a high school senior in Texas, planning on applying to the Rice and Baylor Medical Program. Does any one have more information on that?

ShainaF:
I'm interested in civil and environmental, some schools have them combined, are they combined at Rice

RiceOwlJorge:
Yes they are combined

ShainaF:
Cool

BrandonH3:
Hi I know Rice University students receive a free transportation pass for the bus and train, but is the transportation good overall? Especially when going to the city?

UchennaA:
I'm trying to decide on a major. It's a bit tied up between civil engineering and digital engineering. Does anyone have any advice for me?

ShainaF:
Are first -year students involved in any type of projects?

RiceOwlJeff:
Yes, Civil and Environmental are combined

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
You have until your sophomore year to declare a major.

RiceOwlAdi:
What do you mean by projects? like research?

RiceOwlPhinga:
There is a Rice village within biking distance

RiceOwlJorge:
the metro rail is right across the street. it can take you to the med center, downtown. and several restaurants

RiceOwlJocelyn:
first year students have many opportunities

RiceOwlAshley:
Transportation by the light rail is really good. I've heard the bus can be slightly unreliable but I don't have personal experience with it.

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
I would say you should explore majors and classes before making a decision.

RiceOwlStephanie:
Who was asking about the Rice Baylor program?

ShainaF:
Sure, research and actual hands-on civil engineering stuff outside of the classroom

AndrewA3:
Hello, I had a question about undergrad research opportunities.

cdi191:
ok sounds good thanks and i really enjoy history and politics but i don't know what i would like to major in just yet what does rice offer that might match my interests or combination of it? i also like international relations / diplomacy?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
there are lots of undergrad research opportunities.

UchennaA:
Do they have a general engineering class for freshmen to help them decide on what type of engineering they want to major in?

ShainaF:
Yeah, I was wondering about that too

AndrewA3:
How would an undergrad get involved?

RiceOwlAdi:
Well Rice does offer a political science major and you can concentrate in either American politics, comparative politics, or international relations

RiceOwlStephanie:
there are lots of great opportunities for undergrad research in everything from sciences to humanities. One just has to look around and talk to professors to find out.

RiceOwlJeff:
Yes, ENGI 150 is a class just for that purpose

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
professors are very accessible and if you just take time to talk to them they usually can help make plans for research

RiceOwlPhinga:
there are plenty of undergrad research opportunities, you just have to go to the professor and talk to him

LuzR1:
what kinds of things do the students do for fun?

AngelaT4:
RiceOwl Stephanie: I was asking more advice for the rice baylor program. My name is Angela.

RiceOwlAdi:
You could double major as a polisci/history major if you like

RiceOwlStephanie:
Who wanted to know about Rice Baylor?

RiceOwlPhinga:
especially because we are next to the medical center

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
there are lots of sports at all different levels even for beginners that have never played before

RiceOwlStephanie:
For more information about Rice/Baylor, check out this site http://futureowls.rice.edu/futureowls/Rice_Baylor.asp.

RiceOwlJocelyn:
pretty much anything that appeals to you

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
there are academic clubs and cultural clubs.

RiceOwlAshley:
There are a ton of activities for students here. Club sports and clubs in generals

RiceOwlJeff:
ENGI 150: http://courses.rice.edu/admweb/swkscat.main?p_action=COURSE&p_crn=13909&p_term=201010

ShainaF:
What math classes do engineering majors take freshman year? I'm taking AP Calc now, will that be helpful?

ReginaL:
do you have any suggestions on the questbridge process?

RiceOwlAshley:
Plus, people are always doing something on the weekends

UchennaA:
So ENG 150 is a general engineering class huh? That's cool.

UchennaA:
Can't wait to get into that

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
There are also many activities between colleges.

RiceOwlPhinga:
there are lots of volunteering programs if you like to volunteer

RiceOwlJeff:
Regina, go for it

AndrewA3:
Do you have to be a Century Scholar to participate in undergrad research?

RiceOwlJeff:
It can't hurt

RiceOwlJorge:
Hey everyone. If you have any questions specifically for me. Just click on my name on the right and select "private message" I can answer questions about Transfer credit, Cognitive sciences and skateboarding :-p

RiceOwlAshley:
Talk to your teachers early about recommendations and get on those essays

RiceOwlJeff:
Definitely not

RiceOwlJocelyn:
no

UchennaA:
Haha skateboarding?

RiceOwlAshley:
Research is open to open to everyone

ReginaL:
do you guys remember what you wrote about?

RiceOwlStephanie:
for the questbridge process, focus mainly on your essays. those will be the items that distinguish you from everyone else

RiceOwlAdi:
Well what I would say about QB is that the essays are very important...so if you can really convey who you are in those essays I would say you would do well (since as I said earlier most people have relatively the same gpa/sat)

RiceOwlStephanie:
i don't remember my essays at all.

RiceOwlJocelyn:
i wrote about my background like where I'm from

RiceOwlAdi:
Yeah me too

RiceOwlJorge:
I wrote about wanting to become a lung doctor, to help people with asthma, because i wish i didn't have it

RiceOwlAshley:
Um, I think I wrote about my family life mainly

RiceOwlPhinga:
there are also sample essays on the questbridge website from various people who got matched in earlier years

RiceOwlStephanie:
that can be a great topic

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
I wrote about a defining moment in my life and how that affected me.

NathanielJ:
When you were considering Rice, what put it on your list? What really impressed you about the programs, campus, etc?

RiceOwlAdi:
Well the residential college system is a great thing

RiceOwlJorge:
What isn't impressive about Rice!?

UchennaA:
Getting into Rice on a full scholarship must be nice. I really hope I can get in.

RiceOwlJorge:
:-)

KyleL1:
how are the dorms??

ShainaF:
What are you minoring in?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
I really like the smaller campus and the college system that makes you feel like you're at home.

RiceOwlJorge:
The dorms at martel are AWESOME

UchennaA:
Yeah what are the dorms like

RiceOwlAshley:
Depends on the college really

cdi191:
what is the residential college system

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
the dorms vary depending on which college you're at

RiceOwlJocelyn:
i'm in a new building this year

RiceOwlAdi:
The new dorms at McMurtry are awesome

RiceOwlJorge:
and the two new colleges, McMurtry and Duncan, are brand new!

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
but most of them are alright.

RiceOwlAdi:
private bathrooms

RiceOwlAshley:
I live in one of the newest dorms at McMurtry.

RiceOwlPhinga:
People at Rice are really nice and we help each others in class

RiceOwlStephanie:
Rice grew on me. I loved the campus, the way the residential college is set up, and how easily it was to be able to meet and connect with professors

RiceOwlAdi:
(wouldn't count on that though)

BrandonH3:
Do you get to decide how many roommates you can have, or is it random?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
I'm at Wiess and we have two rooms, four people, one bathroom, and a common room

ReginaL:
what about the weather?

RiceOwlPhinga:
it's random

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
the weather is hot and humid in the summer.

RiceOwlJocelyn:
it's hot and humid

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
there aren't really any seasons

AndrewA3:
Is anybody here an engineering major doing research? If so, I'd be interested to hear what kind of project you are working on.

RiceOwlAdi:
It gets better in the fall though

RiceOwlStephanie:
You can have anywhere from one roommate to a suite (which is four to six people). It depends on which college you are in.

UchennaA:
What's the general attitude at Rice? Is everyone pretty cool with each other or is everyone so caught up in their school work that no one has time for anything else?

RiceOwlJeff:
You can opt for either doubles or triples on your roommate form

RiceOwlAdi:
Right now things are pretty chill

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
Every one is really nice.

RiceOwlAshley:
I think it's required for you to be nice to go to Rice

RiceOwlAdi:
I don't know how it will be around finals...but everyone here is really friendly

ReginaL:
does the whether hurt your studies?

RiceOwlJeff:
Hahaha, I'll second that

RiceOwlPhinga:
I live in a room with 1 roommate and we have a bathroom to ourselves :)

ReginaL:
are dorms w/ ac?

RiceOwlJorge:
I would say there is a balance of fun and studying.

RiceOwlStephanie:
Definitely not. Everyone hangs out, chills, supports their teams, and studies. Most colleges even have study groups?

RiceOwlAdi:
YES

RiceOwlJocelyn:
i like the weather

UchennaA:
Haha. Cool, then I'm a shoe in because I'm as nice as they come =)

RiceOwlStephanie:
Yes the dorms have AC

RiceOwlAdi:
lol

RiceOwlJeff:
The weather HELPS our studies, in the winter you could have classes outside

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
I thought at first that everyone would be very caught up with work but people who work a lot also find time to play a lot

RiceOwlAshley:
Well if you study outside, then yes. But really, no lol

RiceOwlStephanie:
it's pretty easy to balance work and play here

RiceOwlAdi:
Yeah and there's lots of trees so there is shade

AngelaT4:
Does Rice accept AP as well as dual enrollment credits? or do we have to retake all of the basic classes

NathanielJ:
So is Rice much of a party school?

RiceOwlJocelyn:
i like the trees

UchennaA:
That's cool. I wouldn't want to turn in to a veggie or anything

RiceOwlJorge -> AndrewA3:
Hey andrew. Do you have any questions that are more specific?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
Rice accepts AP credits if you get a 4 or 5

LuzR1:
cool

RiceOwlStephanie:
they accept ap if you make a four or higher

RiceOwlJocelyn:
it takes AP credit if you get a 4 or 5

UchennaA:
Do they accept dual credit credits?

JillianA:
for all subjects they accept that?

RiceOwlStephanie:
no

RiceOwlAdi:
Dual enrollment only counts if you take the class at the community college (or other higher level institution)

UchennaA:
Because I have a lot of AP/Dual Credit classes

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
Look at the AP/IB list for credits http://registrar.rice.edu/content.aspx?id=146

RiceOwlJorge -> AngelaT4:
Hey andrew. Do you have any questions that are more specific?

ShainaF:
A four or higher really? Great

RiceOwlJorge -> AngelaT4:
sry, Angela*

RiceOwlPhinga:
We have lots of dances during O week, but once school starts, I think everyone is on track. There are also parties during the school year, but you don't have to attend if you don't like to

RiceOwlStephanie:
AP is great, but Dual Credit cannot count towards your high school credit. I.E: you cannot have a dc class that you have to have for graduation

JillianA:
So I'll be visiting in September for a few days... what are a few must sees/dos in Houston and at Rice?

AndrewA3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
What's the earliest you can start doing research. i.e. freshman or sophomore year

UchennaA:
Yeah I'm technically enrolled at Berkner High School AND Richland College for my classes that fuse AP and Dual Credit classes. STEM does that for me. Would the Dual Credit from that class count?

LuzR1:
do you ever feel like you have work overload?

RiceOwlJorge -> AndrewA3:
Freshman year

AngelaT4 -> RiceOwlStephanie:
Hello Stephanie! the website did not work but just wondering are you in the rice baylor program?

NathanielJ:
Ok, that's cool. I hear you guys have a great sense of humor over there.

RiceOwlAshley:
It's only the beginning of the year so not yet.

RiceOwlJorge -> AndrewA3:
And there are too many opportunities for you to take advantage of

RiceOwlJocelyn:
first week of school so no

RiceOwlPhinga:
The NASA center in Houston is nice :D

RiceOwlStephanie -> AngelaT4:
No, I'm not. It's a highly competitive program. If you ask me some questions, then I'll try to answer them for you, though.

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
There is also an admission chat room that can answer any technical questions as well.

RiceOwlAdi:
The galleria is awesome...basically the biggest mall ever

JuliaS:
Do you feel like there are too many distribution requirements?

RiceOwlJorge -> BrandonH3:
Hey Brandon. Do you have any questions that are more specific?

RiceOwlJeff:
Nope

RiceOwlStephanie:
no.

HannahW5:
Did anyone apply regular decision or did most apply early?

AndrewA3:
Does anybody ever head into Houston often or do most people just chill on campus in their free time?

RiceOwlAdi:
Not at all...12 hours each in humanities, social sciences, and math/science

RiceOwlJorge -> HannahW5:
Hey Hannah. Do you have any questions that are more specific?

RiceOwlStephanie:
i applied regular

RiceOwlJeff:
Mostly you can get a lot out of the way just doing classes your interested in

RiceOwlAdi:
Regular

RiceOwlAshley:
Well on Saturdays we don't have dinner on campus, so you'll have to go off campus and explore Houston

RiceOwlJorge -> HannahW5:
Hey Hannah. Do you have any questions that are more specific?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
A lot of people go into Houston because it's just right outside the hedges.

RiceOwlJorge -> JillianA:
Hey Jillian . Do you have any questions that are more specific?

AngelaT4 -> RiceOwlStephanie:
So a granted admission into rice baylor is more selective than admission into rice? what do they base their selections upon?

RiceOwlAshley:
It's really encouraged that students go off campus and know the city they're in

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
there are also discounts for rice students.

BrandonH3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
No I just had a few general questions to ask about campus life...thanks though!

JuliaS:
For theatre and dance shows, etc?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
yes.

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
and museums

RiceOwlJorge -> JuliaS:
Hey Julia, Do you have any questions that are more specific?

RiceOwlAdi:
I know we get into the museums for free

RiceOwlAshley:
Museums and zoo are free!

RiceOwlJeff:
And museums and just about anything else you can think of

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
we get the zoo free also

RiceOwlStephanie -> AngelaT4:
yes. Here's the admission criteria:

"

RiceOwlStephanie -> AngelaT4:
•Students must submit The Common Application, The Rice Supplement to the Common Application, and the Rice/Baylor Medical Scholars Application to Rice by December 1, 2009 to compete in this program. Please refer to the Admission and Financial Aid Calendars for details. •Students interested in the Rice/Baylor Program may apply to Rice as Early or Regular Decision candidates. Early Decision applicants must commit to Rice by January 2, regardless of the Baylor decision to be made later in the spring. Early Decision applicants to Rice must submit all Rice application materials by November 1, however, the Rice/Baylor Medical Scholars Application does not have to be submitted until December 1st. •Rice notifies finalists in March and Baylor conducts interviews in April. •The scholars are announced in late April.

"

JuliaS -> RiceOwlJorge:
Have you declared a major?

LuzR1:
all the museum exhibits or permanent ones?

RiceOwlJorge -> JuliaS:
I am a junior, thanks to transfer credit

RiceOwlJorge -> JuliaS:
I will declare next week

RiceOwlStephanie:
they usually change, I believe

RiceOwlAdi:
You get discounts for special exhibits

RiceOwlJorge -> JuliaS:
just lazy, lol

LuzR1:
that's cool

NathanielJ:
Is the campus laid out well enough so that it's easy to get from your dorms to your classes?

JuliaS -> RiceOwlJorge:
Do you know anything about the theatre program at Rice?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
yes.

HannahW5:
Did anyone apply to any other schools, and if so which ones? Or I guess, how did you decide on Rice based on the other schools you got accepted to?

RiceOwlAdi:
Yeah there's a loop and buses come periodically and take you around the loop (the buildings are along the loop)

RiceOwlJeff:
There is a shuttle that goes around the campus loop too

RiceOwlStephanie:
it's almost a guarantee that you will have to hike across campus for at least one of your classes

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
it's a relatively small campus so you can walk everywhere

RiceOwlJorge -> JuliaS:
http://theatre.rice.edu/

NathanielJ:
Are the buses free?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
also some students also bring bikes

RiceOwlAdi:
yes

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
yes.

RiceOwlJorge -> JuliaS:
I know that every college has a theatre group.

RiceOwlPhinga:
yes, they do a very good job introducing you around campus during o week so you already know where to go to your classes. In the worse case, there is always a map

RiceOwlJorge -> JuliaS:
you can join those plays, or enter the program if you are more interested.

AngelaT4 -> RiceOwlStephanie:
Thank you for the information!!!

RiceOwlAdi:
Yeah there are directories around campus

RiceOwlJorge -> JuliaS:
Hope the site helps

NathanielJ:
What kind of religious groups are there?

RiceOwlAdi:
So if you are lost along the way then you can find your way

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
anything you can think of.

RiceOwlAdi:
All kinds really

RiceOwlStephanie -> HannahW5:
I applied to A&M, Tech, and Baylor as well, but Rice just felt right to me. It was were I knew I wanted to come and what felt most comfortable. Ultimately, it was a gut feeling.

RiceOwlJocelyn:
catholic, jewish and many others

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
and if you have a new one I'm sure you could make your own club as well.

RiceOwlJorge:
baptist

RiceOwlAshley:
They gave us a guide for all the near-by places of worship

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
that's really easy to do.

JuliaS -> RiceOwlJorge:
I looked at the course offerings for this semester, and they mostly look like intro classes. Are there more advanced theatre classes too?

RiceOwlAshley:
Plus there are clubs

RiceOwlPhinga:
there are many churches around campus

AngelaT4:
Are there a mix of cultures or is it predominantly one or two cultures?

RiceOwlStephanie:
a large mix

RiceOwlJorge -> JuliaS:
If you go here: http://registrar.rice.edu/students/?linkidentifier=id&itemid=39 click on the left hand column and look for courses offered. it should be there

RiceOwlStephanie:
one of the most varied in the nation

RiceOwlAdi:
It is very diverse here

RiceOwlJocelyn:
very diverse

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
it's really diverse here

RiceOwlPhinga:
Rice is diverse, we have people from all over the world

JillianA:
would you say that one side or the other dominates the political scene or is it a friendly balance?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
lots of international students as well

RiceOwlJocelyn:
friendly balance

RiceOwlJorge -> JuliaS:
you can also see the current classes being offered this semester, if you're curious

KyleL1:
do you know anyone who attends rice and lives on the west coast? If so, how did they adjust to the new and different surroundings?

RiceOwlStephanie:
there really isn't political scene, that I've seen so far

RiceOwlAshley:
I think politics are pretty... not here

JuliaS -> RiceOwlJorge:
Thanks.

RiceOwlJocelyn:
I'm from CA

KyleL1:
I'm Kyle by the way.

RiceOwlAdi:
Nice to meet you

RiceOwlStephanie:
Really well, adjustment

RiceOwlJorge -> JuliaS:
:-)

KyleL1:
Nice to meet all of you

RiceOwlAdi:
Adjusting takes a bit of time no matter where you are from

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
Nice to meet you too!

RiceOwlJocelyn:
i like it here

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
:-D

RiceOwlAdi:
Because it really is a completely new experience

LuzR1:
do you have a fitness gym of some kind?

JuliaS:
Does anyone live in Georgia? Do you drive or fly to get back and forth?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
Yes

RiceOwlJocelyn:
yes

RiceOwlAshley:
We do!

RiceOwlStephanie:
there is a new rec center opening up this fall

RiceOwlAdi:
Yes a brand new one will open in a couple weeks actually

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
we are building a new recreation center

RiceOwlAshley:
They're in the process of building another one too

RiceOwlPhinga:
yes, we have a recreational center and wellness center

RiceOwlJeff:
Ya, I'm also from CA, and honestly, you'll be too wrapped up in the campus experience to worry about adjusting

RiceOwlJorge -> LuzR1:
Hey luz. If you have any more specific questions just click on my name and enter "private chat' and i can answer any questions you might have. :-)

AngelaT4:
So in all you won't regret going to Rice instead of going to the fancy Ivy league schools?

RiceOwlJocelyn:
nope

RiceOwlStephanie:
definitely not

RiceOwlJorge:
Ivy league is only a football league. wikipedia

NathanielJ:
You said there's no dinner served on Fridays. How does the rest of the meal plan stuff work?

RiceOwlAdi:
Not at all...thinking back I would not have had the same experience anywhere else

RiceOwlAshley:
Saturdays actually

LisaS3:
Are any of you originally from Houston?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
I am!!!

RiceOwlJorge:
yes!

RiceOwlPhinga:
I am from houston

JuliaS:
How do you like the residential college system?

RiceOwlJorge:
and Minnesota

RiceOwlAdi:
It is one of the best things about Rice

RiceOwlAdi:
It really lets you to get to know people better

RiceOwlAdi:
(The friendly rivalries are a lot of fun too)

RiceOwlStephanie:
No meals are served on Saturday evenings and Sunday breakfast. This kind of forces students to go off campus and explore their surroundings. If you live on campus, you have 19 meals a week, which are all but those two meals.

RiceOwlJeff:
I love it, I've gotten sooo much advice from upperclassmen in my res college just because of that one thing we have in common

NathanielJ -> RiceOwlJorge:
Whoa, cool, I didn't know we could do this! (SM)

JuliaS:
Do you have one roommate, or more?

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
yep yep

RiceOwlAdi:
One

RiceOwlAshley:
I have one

RiceOwlStephanie:
I have one

RiceOwlJocelyn:
i have one

HannahW5:
Are any of you English majors, by chance?

RiceOwlStephanie:
I am

RiceOwlJeff:
I have one too, but there are suites also, usually for upperclassmen

JillianA:
So are you in the band?

LisaS3:
Did you guys mind staying in Texas? If you grow up he

RiceOwlStephanie:
I am

HannahW5:
Because isn't the campus mostly populated by engineering?

LisaS3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
Thanks! Did you mind staying here? I mean, you pretty much know all the places. Did you find anything new to experience?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
I'm from Houston. I really like being in the city, but on campus you forget that you're in Houston. It's really cool having two places that you can consider home.

RiceOwlAdi:
Not necessarily

RiceOwlStephanie:
I loved staying in campus

RiceOwlJeff:
No, definitely not, that'd make life boring

JuliaS:
Is anyone a theatre major?

RiceOwlPhinga:
You can have many suite mates though

NikitaB -> RiceOwlJorge:
hi

AngelaT4:
Is anyone planning on matriculating to medical school?!?! Because i want to know how prepared do you think rice has made you to go into med school...

RiceOwlJorge -> NikitaB:
hi

Pin-wenW:
PINFANG!!!

RiceOwlJeff:
Some of my best classes are in the history department, even though I'm an engineering major

Pin-wenW:
HAHAHA xDDD

RiceOwlPhinga:
I am doing Pre med at Rice

HannahW5:
Awesome.

RiceOwlJorge -> LisaS3:
I moved from Minnesota freshman year of HS. So I've been here for 5 yrs now. I honestly would've returned, but just for friends. until Rice accepted me.

RiceOwlStephanie:
You find that there are actually more people in the other majors than there are engineers. Most people who start out as engineers end up changing their major, like everyone else

RiceOwlPhinga:
Rice has more than 90 % acceptance rate to medical school

NikitaB -> RiceOwlJorge:
what are you majoring in?

RiceOwlJorge -> NikitaB:
Cognitive Sciences, and business minor

NathanielJ -> RiceOwlJorge:
Ok, I have a few questions about housing. How much do the colleges vary? Like, are some language dorms, or substance free, or single-gender, or other things like that?

HannahW5:
That's awesome. Thanks.

AngelaT4:
wow! 90% that way above the national average. Thanks for that statistic!

LisaS3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
Haha. Okay, thanks.

RiceOwlJorge -> LisaS3:
yes, being downtown opens lots of doors

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
Well

LuzR1:
how's the library?

Pin-wenW:
Question: how is the food? the variety?

RiceOwlStephanie:
awesome

JuliaS:
If no one's a theatre major, could someone maybe put me in touch with someone who is?

RiceOwlJocelyn:
the food is awesome

RiceOwlStephanie:
the food is good and very varied

RiceOwlAdi:
The food is pretty good. And there's a lot of variety

RiceOwlPhinga:
Library is HUGE

RiceOwlPhinga:
six floors

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
there's the older colleges, which i don't really go to, all the colleges are separated by classroom buildings (north and south colleges)

RiceOwlAdi:
Plenty of vegetarian options if that is your thing

RiceOwlJeff:
One of our chefs even offers a very popular cooking class here too

Pin-wenW:
COOKING CLASS

Pin-wenW:
really?

Pin-wenW:
is it considered a credit?

JillianA:
that's awesome

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
I'm at martel. its only 6 yrs old. and very nice. They call them suites rather than dorms

Pin-wenW:
or an extracurricular?

hoyinlamcolin:
sorry what is the recommended major at Rice for a pre-med path?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
On the 6th floor are private study rooms too that only students can get into.

Pin-wenW:
i would def. be interested in that!!

GrahamT:
I'm from DC and have never been to the South. I'm attracted by the lifestyle there--my Dad is from Albuquerque. Are there many NE-types(NY,MA,PA)?

RiceOwlAshley:
There really isn't a recommended major for pre-med.

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
I know people who want to be pre-med that are hist majors

RiceOwlStephanie:
There are lots

RiceOwlAshley:
If you want to major in the humanities you can

RiceOwlPhinga:
You can do whatever major you want to and do premed

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
you can do any majors actually.

JuliaS:
If no one's a theatre major, could someone maybe put me in touch with someone who is?

RiceOwlAshley:
You'll just take a different math/physics class

RiceOwlStephanie:
Rice is very varied in where students are from

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
all dorms are cooed, (not in rooms), drinking is allowed on campus, but not everyone does.

Pin-wenW:
how is the engineering program?

hoyinlamcolin:
thnx guys

RiceOwlJeff:
Cooking class: http://courses.rice.edu/admweb/swkscat.main?p_action=COURSE&p_crn=14571&p_term=201010

RiceOwlPhinga:
more than 50% do biochem but I heard med schools are moving away from natural science majors

RiceOwlAdi:
Yeah there's people from all around the country (and a lot of internationals!)

RiceOwlStephanie:
What questions do you have about theater?

NathanielJ -> RiceOwlJorge:
Are people pretty responsible about it?

RiceOwlEnrique:
the engineering program is excellent depending on which field you want to go into depends on how much is expected from you

Pin-wenW:
wow!

JillianA:
I know that Rice has an amazing music program, but how easy is it for non-majors to tap into that?

Pin-wenW:
are you taking the cooking class?

RiceOwlJeff:
I couldn't get in it, no

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
Rice has a very individual alcohol policy, I don't drink, and have never been forced to. Others do, Yes, there is responsibility, but like all drinkers, I prefer to just stay away

JosephO:
Same question as JillianA - how difficult is it to participate in activities such as the symphony orchestra? Is it reserved for music majors?

JosephO:
Hi Pin Fang, btw.

JuliaS:
I was hoping to find out what the season is typically like, and how much involvement students have in the tech side. The website only lists one show for the current season.

RaulD:
Is any of the Rice Owls involved with the Rice/ Baylor Scholars program?

RiceOwlStephanie:
There are several great music classes for non-majors, including several bands. I'm part of the MOB and the Rice Symphonic Band!

Pin-wenW:
mechanical engineering or material sciences

RiceOwlPhinga:
I am doing Math Econ and premed, and I know of people who do English and premed, all kinds of majors really

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
:-)

RiceOwlStephanie:
I can answer questions about Rice/Baylor

JillianA:
How time consuming is the MOB?

RiceOwlStephanie:
not very

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
just send me another message if you have any more questions

RaulD:
Thank you stephanie

RiceOwlStephanie:
no problem

RiceOwlJorge:
:-p

RiceOwlEnrique:
materials can be reached either through mechE or chemE

AngelaT4:
Stephanie, do you know anything about the interview process for rice baylor?

RaulD:
First of all what is your major and are you interested in medicine

ReginaL:
what made you guys choose Rice over other colleges?

LuzR1:
so are you guys first-year students?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
most of us are freshmen yes.

RaulD:
I know you need recommendation letters and only 14 students het accepted

JosephO:
hi luz

RiceOwlEnrique:
I'm a first year

RiceOwlJocelyn:
Biological Sciences, not pre-med

LuzR1:
hi joseph

RiceOwlTravis:
sophomore here

RiceOwlStephanie:
Fifty students are given an interview and fourteen are chosen

Pin-wenW:
Hey Enrique, are you in engineering?

GrahamT:
It would be helpful to know where else you all got in and chose Rice over.

RiceOwlJorge:
If anyone has any specific questions about transfer credit, Cognitive Sciences, Business minor, or Houston or how to be awesome. Just click on my name (jorge) and select private message! :-p

RaulD:
did you apply

Pin-wenW:
cognitive sciences!!

JosephO:
hehe. Another question: How are the nonprofit organization opportunities? Are there student opportunities for participating in programs like Engineering without Borders?

RiceOwlJorge -> Pin-wenW:
any questions

RiceOwlEnrique:
well i applied with the intention of going into engineering but i decided to double major in spanish and chemistry

RiceOwlJeff:
Yes, there is a campus club for EWB

Pin-wenW -> RiceOwlJorge:
how is it?

RiceOwlStephanie:
There are lots of those, and they have a lot of participants

JillianA:
What's the number one thing that you would suggest a visiting student do while in Houston?

RiceOwlJorge -> Pin-wenW:
I love it, It has a ton of options as to which classes to take

Pin-wenW -> RiceOwlJorge:
are there any prerequisites needed ?

RiceOwlAdi:
Well I was admitted to Emory, Tulane, and GWU...I chose Rice because it was better academically, residential college system, and most importantly was going to be a lot cheaper

hoyinlamcolin:
how is the weather in Houston?

JosephO:
Awesome. How often do they get to participate service projects (especially anything overseas)?

RaulD:
stephanie what would be your best advice to be accepted on the rice Baylor medical scholars program?

LisaS3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
Cognitive Sciences... tell me all you know! Haha. It's what I really think I'm going to major in, with a business minor

RiceOwlStephanie:
Mild

RiceOwlJeff:
They usually organize multiple destinations every summer

RiceOwlAshley:
Hot and humid in the summer. It's starting to cool off a little

RiceOwlJorge:
it's interdisciplinary, so its between, computer sci, ling, psyc, phil, and advanced

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
there are service projects as well as internships abroad

AngelaT4:
I was going to ask the same question RaulD

Pin-wenW -> RiceOwlPin-Fang:
pinfang :)

RiceOwlPin-Fang -> Pin-wenW:
hey!

RiceOwlJorge -> Pin-wenW:
not to major in it, no. It would help to have taken a psyc 101 course, but you can take that there

Pin-wenW -> RiceOwlPin-Fang:
haha sry

RaulD:
Coincidence

RiceOwlJeff:
http://www.ewb.rice.edu/about.php

RiceOwlJorge -> LisaS3:
its def awesome

LisaS3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
Is there a difference between that and neuroscience? Most schools only offer one

RiceOwlEnrique -> Pin-wenW:
The engineering schedules are very rigid and over your four years you won't have many open spaces i really wanted to major in spanish so I had to change my major to something more manageable

RiceOwlStephanie:
Having not actually applied or entered, I cannot give any advice other than to be yourself, be honest, and focus on your essays where they you can really shine.

LuzR1:
do you have easy access to the professors?

JosephO -> RiceOwlPin-Fang:
HI LOL.

RiceOwlStephanie:
yes

RiceOwlJocelyn:
yep

KyleL1:
what about SAT scores?

Pin-wenW -> RiceOwlEnrique:
ouch

RiceOwlJorge -> LisaS3:
lots of options. I don't think there is a neuroscience major

ReginaL:
what other schools did you rank besides rice?

RiceOwlPhinga:
professors are very nice and not intimidating at all

LisaS3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
So, I'm guessing that means the profs are amazing...? Hopefully

Pin-wenW -> RiceOwlEnrique:
so no time for other things?

RiceOwlJeff:
You literally eat lunch with professors on a daily basis

hoyinlamcolin:
what is the professor to student ratio?

Pin-wenW -> RiceOwlEnrique:
i wanted to keep on learning french

Pin-wenW -> RiceOwlEnrique:
while majoring in engineering

NathanielJ -> RiceOwlJorge:
Thanks, Jorge! Just one more round here. (SU)

RiceOwlAdi:
0.209027777777778

Pin-wenW -> RiceOwlEnrique:
and maybe study abroad or intern in france

RiceOwlTravis:
i actually got to have a private guided reading with one professor last summer.

RiceOwlAdi:
median class size 14

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
Ranking really depend on which schools you are interested in.

Pin-wenW -> RiceOwlEnrique:
would that be out of the question?

RiceOwlJorge -> LisaS3:
there are neuro classes open to you taught by baylor staff

RaulD:
stephanie how difficult is to get into Rice?

NathanielJ -> RiceOwlJorge:
Are engineering students encouraged to pursue the liberal arts as well?

RiceOwlEnrique -> Pin-wenW:
depends on the field of engineering but freshmen year the classes are all the same

RiceOwlEnrique -> Pin-wenW:
chem phys and math

Pin-wenW -> RiceOwlEnrique:
ok

RiceOwlJorge -> LisaS3:
I have yet to have a prof who hasn't greeted me with a smile, and help me out 1-1 during office hrs.

RiceOwlEnrique -> Pin-wenW:
i am taking spanish now

RiceOwlJorge -> LisaS3:
UT won't do that! lol

Pin-wenW -> RiceOwlEnrique:
and do APs count for engineering?

hoyinlamcolin:
did you guys all get in through questbridge?

RiceOwlEnrique -> Pin-wenW:
with those classes

JosephO -> LuzR1:
haha hi luz

Pin-wenW -> RiceOwlEnrique:
ok

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
No.

RiceOwlAshley:
I did

RiceOwlAdi:
I got in regular round

OliviaL3:
hi everyone. are there any rice students that are pursuing a psychology major? or know any information about the department?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
I got in through regular

LuzR1 -> JosephO:
hey joseph

RiceOwlStephanie:
It's more competitive than any state schools, but other than that, I don't know.

RiceOwlAdi:
but yes through questbridge

LuzR1 -> JosephO:
lol

JosephO -> LuzR1:
lol

Pin-wenW -> RiceOwlJorge:
thank you!

NathanielJ -> RiceOwlJorge:
So it's pretty separate class-wise?

Pin-wenW -> RiceOwlEnrique:
thank you!

LuzR1 -> JosephO:
this is cool

RiceOwlEnrique -> Pin-wenW:
no problem

JosephO -> LuzR1:
yep

ReginaL:
was it the only school you ranked?

RiceOwlEnrique -> Pin-wenW:
its manageable

LisaS3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
Cool. Haha. I hate UT. WAY too big. Is the program itself small?

RiceOwlAdi:
no

JosephO -> LuzR1:
brb!

ReginaL:
what else did you rank?

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
What they do here is make 3 different types of classes, and tell you to take 12hrs in each one.

KyleL1:
how are the exams? are the really rigorous?

RiceOwlAdi:
I also ranked Yale Stanford and Penn (just for giggles) Penn, Chicago, Rice, Emory, and Claremont McKenna

RiceOwlAshley:
We haven't had any yet

RiceOwlStephanie:
we haven't taken any tests yet, so we are unable to answer that question

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
ex. Distribution 1 is writing , hist, lang, stuff. D2 is math and science, and D3 is something else

RiceOwlPhinga:
So far we only have the Honor Code Exam :D which is not that bad

RiceOwlEnrique:
some classes don't even have tests

JosephO:
How are the dorms at Rice? Haha.

RaulD:
What was your SAT Score and your rank class that you gave to rice via your application; if its ok with you to share that info.

RiceOwlAdi:
Really nice

RiceOwlEnrique:
AMAZING DORMS

RiceOwlStephanie:
Nice.

OliviaL3:
there's an honor code exam?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
Well...many test are take home because we have the honor code

AngelaT4:
so how is the honors program?

RiceOwlAdi:
Don't worry about it olivia

RiceOwlAshley:
It's easy

OliviaL3:
haha. thanks

RiceOwlAshley:
It's open-book

ReginaL:
is that like, don't go look up the answers?

hoyinlamcolin:
what's the honor code?

RiceOwlJocelyn:
the honor code exam is easy you can use the book

RiceOwlAshley:
Only open-book exam you will have most likely

RiceOwlAdi:
yeah basically

NathanielJ -> RiceOwlJorge:
Oh, so people do have time to study both languages and engineering?

RiceOwlJorge -> LisaS3:
umm, I wouldn't say its small

RiceOwlTravis:
i got to work in the psyc department over the summer even though i'm not a major. i can tell you that the professors are generally great (i've never heard a complaint) and that you can even get involved in research if you want to.

NathanielJ -> RiceOwlJorge:
for example

OliviaL3:
GREAT

LuzR1:
are there many classes where grad students are the teacher?

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
so all you would have to do is take a couple other classes or transfer credit. If you do are engineering, than all your d2's are done, and lots of d3

RiceOwlAdi:
Not in my experience

ReginaL:
so you're allowed to look up the answers to take home tests?

LisaS3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
around how many people?

OliviaL3:
i'm really interested in psych

RiceOwlAdi:
no

RiceOwlJocelyn:
no

RiceOwlAshley:
My English class is taught by a grad student actually

JosephO:
From the three lightning fast responses, I'm guessing the dorms are indeed epic. Haha. Another question: how much free time do Rice students generally have?

RiceOwlJeff:
Usually tests like those don't have answers you can look up easily

AngelaT4:
Is anyone taking the Honor Program curriculum?

RiceOwlJorge -> LisaS3:
Since there are so many departments, you have lots of options, have classes with people who are in different majors as well

RiceOwlPhinga:
there are some math and english classes that are taught by grad students that i know of

RiceOwlPhinga:
but not many

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
and it depends on the guidelines that the prof. give

RiceOwlJorge -> LisaS3:
idk how many people, i actually need to declare next week.

hoyinlamcolin:
thnx guys

GrahamT:
the reputation is Rice is for science and math mainly--accurate?

RiceOwlJorge -> LisaS3:
h/o

ReginaL:
can you give an example of a test question?

RiceOwlTravis:
i'm actually on the honor council. it's a set of rules that lets students do things like take tests whenever they want to as long as they don't do any sort of cheating. if you do, then there are big penalties, but almost everyone abides by it.

OliviaL3:
of the rice students here, are any of you houstonians

RiceOwlAdi:
We haven't had tests yet

RiceOwlJorge -> LisaS3:
here: http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~cognsci/

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
I'm a houstonian

RiceOwlStephanie:
You can have as much free time as you want. The average student takes 15 hours a semester, but you can take as much or as little as you want.

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
(SM)

RiceOwlEnrique:
no not really we have an amazing music school and an equally amazing architecture school

LisaS3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
I totally forgot about that.

LisaS3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
Thanks.

RiceOwlAdi:
Yes and my polisci classes are really good too

NathanielJ -> RiceOwlJorge:
Engineering students do have time to study other things as well?

RiceOwlJeff:
And like I said earlier some of Rice's best classes are in sociology or history

LuzR1:
what are some of the electives offered?

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
I began as a civil engineer. But I learned that my physics wasn't as good as i thought. The engineering department is very professional. If you earn a Rice Degree in engineering, you're set.

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
What questions about Houston do you have?

RiceOwlTravis:
every test is going to be different for every class. it will just be standard sort of stuff about what you've gone over, but teachers always make sure enough has been covered.

RiceOwlAdi:
Everything you can think of

AngelaT4:
Thanks for all your help and comments, especially Stephanie!

JuliaS:
Can you double or triple major?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
Yes.

RiceOwlAdi:
http://courses.rice.edu/admweb/swkscat.main?p_action=cata

LisaS3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
So part of the cogn. sci. dept. is the neuroscience dept. but there's not a major for it? That's kinda weird

RiceOwlJeff:
Yes, many people double major

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
Yes, i have a friend who is structural, he also composes music and we skateboard once and a while

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
it is really easy to double or triple major

RiceOwlJocelyn:
yes

BrandonH3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
Hey Jorge I have a quick question, how is the Rice's business school?

OliviaL3:
Well I just wanted to know if there were any houstonians admitted through Questbridge. PS: I live in Houston. :D

JosephO:
How many kids from Houston generally get into Rice?

RiceOwlTravis:
i'm doing linguistics/history right now.

RiceOwlPhinga:
I am a houstonian

RaulD:
Enrique can i ask you what you rank class and sat scores were when you applied to Rice; in order to see what I'm dealing with, if that's ok with you.

RiceOwlJorge -> BrandonH3:
Here's what you have to know, that i wish i knew.::::

JuliaS:
What other schools did you apply to?

NathanielJ -> RiceOwlJorge:
Awesome. So is the degree a bachelor's of engineering, or a BSE?

RiceOwlStephanie:
There are no required courses, so every class is an elective. You have to take the classes required for your major, and you have to fill your distribution credits, but other than that you can take whatever classes you want or that interest you.

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
There are 3 people in the room right now that are houstonians

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
Bachelors in arts, or science or whatever engineering you are

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
well that doesn't really matter too much its more of what you have to offer to rice.

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
out of like 10 people

RiceOwlJorge -> LisaS3:
srry

OliviaL3:
Were all three of you finalists

RiceOwlTravis:
everybody in here was a finalist

KyleL1:
I think a major factor that I want for a college is the fact that teachers will help the students if they need help, do you think the professors will invest time in students who ask for help?

LisaS3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
for?

OliviaL3:
O. ok.

RiceOwlJorge -> BrandonH3:
Rice does not have a business major for undergrads. I didn't know that. So I'm taking the minor. And majoring in cognitive sciences

RiceOwlAdi:
Yes definitely

RiceOwlJorge -> BrandonH3:
that will help you leverage marketing techniques

RiceOwlAdi:
All the professors have office hours and if you need help with anything you can go to their office and talk about whatever you have on your mind

RiceOwlPhinga:
Yes, you can meet professors at coffee shop or come to their office

GrahamT:
great help everyone--I'm psyched to apply

RiceOwlAshley:
Do it!

RiceOwlAdi:
Awesome! :)

KyleL1:
that is so cool.

RiceOwlEnrique:
you really should be Rice is an AMAZING school

RiceOwlStephanie:
And many professors are college fellows, so you will often see them eating lunch with the students

JuliaS:
What other schools did you consider before deciding on Rice?

RiceOwlAdi:
Yeah my polisci professors plays foosball at lunch

PhuoctruongP:
how's the weather like in houston?

NathanielJ -> RiceOwlJorge:
I mean that some schools for say, ME, offer a BSE, and others offer a BSME. Which does Rice offer?

RiceOwlStephanie:
Mild

RiceOwlJorge -> BrandonH3:
I was really upset at first. I spoke to the President. Dr. Leebron, and he told me they would start one anytime in the near future. After talking to some professionals downtown and JPMorgan-chase. they told me it really doesn't matter what you major in for business because if you want a nice decent job

RiceOwlPhinga:
humid

RiceOwlTravis:
i thought about yale and harvard, but decided they were too cold

RiceOwlJocelyn:
hot and humid in summer

OliviaL3:
Agreed

RiceOwlEnrique:
it gets hot and humid but i'm from chicago

RiceOwlAshley:
It's finally starting to cool down. Just a little.

DanielD1:
I have a question for the Rice students. I was wondering if one of you was originally from the north, like from New York or New England?

RiceOwlJorge -> BrandonH3:
you're most likely going to get an MBA. And surely, i will go to the Rice Grad school for business( hopefully) anyway.

JuliaS:
How cold does it get in the winter?

PhuoctruongP:
so are u ok with the weather in late summer?

LuzR1:
what advice do you have for applying to Rice?

DanielD1:
My question actually also pertains to weather.

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
Well that's why I'm asking you; i excelled at academics but my sat is difficult when it comes to writing and reading since I'm hispanic, i want to get into rice with a passion, so what did you offer to Rice; what made them choose you and not the other 120 applicants in the dean of admissions desk

RiceOwlStephanie:
it snowed here last winter, but it didn't stick long

RiceOwlJorge -> BrandonH3:
just as long as you take internships and show effort. like everyone else.... hope that helps

BrandonH3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
Wow thanks for letting me know, I did not know that either...thanks for the tip! :-)

RiceOwlAshley:
I think the lowest it gets in the winter is the 40s

RiceOwlTravis:
about the fifties in january and february. we'll still be wearing shorts in december.

RiceOwlAdi:
Express yourself in your essays...the essays are really what set you apart from other applicants

RiceOwlJocelyn:
let your personality come through your essays

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
well i was in a ton of clubs

LuzR1:
thanks Adi

OliviaL3:
What did you generally talk about in your essays?

RiceOwlAdi:
np

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
i'm hispanic as well

OliviaL3:
Personal hardships?

RiceOwlStephanie:
I don't remember

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
i was in my math team

RiceOwlPhinga:
family

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
my science club

PhuoctruongP:
Anything students here studying engineering at Rice?

RiceOwlAdi:
Umm I generally just what my life has been like until now

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
BSME

JuliaS:
When do classes start in the fall, and when do they end in the spring?

RiceOwlAdi:
including ups and downs

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
NHS

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
here's a link with more info

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
you speak spanish fluently

KyleL1:
Another factor is the area of the school. I live in Hawaii so, I feel the shift to Rice is going to be a huge change. Is it hard to adjust to the climate and people?

RiceOwlAshley:
Um, first day of class was this Monday

RiceOwlJorge -> NathanielJ:
http://engr.rice.edu/

OliviaL3:
Oh ok.

RiceOwlJeff:
Yes, I'm and engineering student

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
yes

RiceOwlTravis:
classes started this week and end in late april

RiceOwlAdi:
http://registrar.rice.edu/content.aspx?id=173

RiceOwlAshley:
And you'll be done by the end of April/first week of May

RiceOwlAdi:
that is the link to the academic calendar

OliviaL3:
Any of you guys from not citizens of the US (PRs)?

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
is it ok if i talk to you in spanish for a little

RiceOwlStephanie:
it sometimes varies

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
yea that's fine

RiceOwlPhinga:
classes start on Aug 24 this year but for freshmen, orientation starts on the 16th

JuliaS:
Thanks.

JosephO:
How's the workload compared to the senior year of high school (assuming we take the most challenging courses at a very challenging high school)?

PhuoctruongP:
hi Jeff, who did u choose Rice over school like UT austin in texas?

RiceOwlAdi:
College is harder than high school

NathanielJ -> RiceOwlJorge:
Ok, thank you for your time.

RiceOwlJeff:
I'm actually a Californian student

RiceOwlJorge -> LisaS3:
here's a link

RiceOwlJorge -> LisaS3:
http://www.futureowls.rice.edu/futureowls/Schools_and_Departments.asp?SnID=2

RiceOwlJeff:
but I chose Rice over schools like UC Berkeley mainly because I didn't want to be just a number

RiceOwlJocelyn:
I'm from CA too

RiceOwlJorge:
RICE!

PhuoctruongP:
oh I see

RiceOwlJorge -> LisaS3:
hope it helps. feel free to ask me more!

OliviaL3:
any of you born in another country?

RiceOwlJeff:
Here I can talk to my professors and participate in research much more easily than in a large school

RiceOwlStephanie:
Right now I'm finding the workload a lot lighter than high school senior year. I took a really heavy load, though, so my experience might not be normal.

NathanielJ:
How many of you got matched with Rice and how many got in with regular decision?

OliviaL3:
i know that rice likes diversity.

RiceOwlPhinga:
I am born in Vietnam

RiceOwlJorge:
i was born near mexico

PhuoctruongP:
so the engineering college at Rice is small enough for u to get interaction with the faculty?

OliviaL3:
Cool!

RiceOwlAshley:
I was matched

GrahamT:
How is Rice diff than UT--besides being smaller?

KyleL1:
that's awesome. thank you all for helping me answer my questions.

RiceOwlJocelyn:
I was matched

LuzR1:
are there research opportunities for first year students

RiceOwlPhinga:
more squirrels

RiceOwlTravis:
yes, you can always interact with any professors.

RiceOwlJorge:
yes, research = first year if you want

RiceOwlTravis:
yeah, i worked in the psyc department last year.

RiceOwlAdi:
Residential college system, better academics

OliviaL3:
are there any freshman seminars to help you in your first year?

RiceOwlAdi:
smaller

RiceOwlEnrique:
i wasn't matched but I was admitted by early decision

RiceOwlAshley:
Yes there are

RiceOwlJeff:
In a way yes, there is no actual separate engineering college, but professors are accessible

RiceOwlAdi:
Yes there are freshman seminars

RiceOwlJorge:
yes = freshmen seminars

RiceOwlJeff:
I'm in one

RiceOwlJocelyn:
plenty of freshman seminars

RiceOwlAshley:
I'm in a freshman seminar that deals with biological research

OliviaL3:
what is that like

RiceOwlJeff:
It's great

RiceOwlJeff:
the one I

RiceOwlTravis:
a great program is the century scholarship. i've got a lot of friends doing it right now. two years of research and $1000 each year for classes.

RiceOwlStephanie:
I'm taking a freshman seminar in Bionanotechnology that looks like it's going to be a great class.

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:

UniverseE -> RiceOwlPin-Fang:
Hi

RiceOwlJorge -> GrahamT:
Hey graham, do you have any specific questions? if i don't know the answer i can get someone else to you

LuzR1:
how are you guys mainly paying for college?

RiceOwlAshley:
I don't have it until October though so I can't much. I did meet up with the professor in charge of it and she's very enthusiastic

OliviaL3:
Thanks!

RiceOwlJeff:
I'm in is about Brown v Board, and the teacher leads discussions that really make you think about how different people interact

RiceOwlJorge:
uh, scholarships

RiceOwlTravis:
tons of finaid and a few loans

RiceOwlAdi:
Yeah Rice is extremely generous with finaid

PhuoctruongP:
Jeff, how is rice's engineering compared to columbia engineering? And how is houston compared to New York in terms of opportunities for engineers?? :)

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
Eso es algo que las universidades de ahoras no entienden, lo que verdadeeramente importa es el estudio y tu deseo de superarte.

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
si eso es verdad pero las escuelas quiren estudiantes que pueden con toda la estress que la escuela nos pone

RiceOwlJorge:
I went to harvard this summer, and Rice is 100x more beautiful than harvard, by far

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
tampoco tienes que tener las mejored notas de escuela

OliviaL3:
in regard to psychology (sorry, I keep asking about this department), does rice have a pretty good psychology program?

RiceOwlJeff:
I wouldn't know because I didn't apply to Columbia, but I'd say that they are similar in programs

RiceOwlStephanie:
most definitely.

RiceOwlJorge -> GrahamT:
feel free to click on my name and private chat!

RiceOwlJorge -> RaulD:
hey raul

RaulD -> RiceOwlJorge:
Hey jorge

RiceOwlJorge -> RaulD:
if you have any questions, feel free to ask

RiceOwlJeff:
I'm not sure how many opportunities New York city itself has for engineers though

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
yo no era el mejor de mi escuela y yo tambien recibi pruebas pobres in la parte de leer

KimC:
How is the travel abroad program? and the foreign language department?

RiceOwlAdi:
There are a lot of oil companies in Houston and they need engineers

PhuoctruongP:
what kind of engineering do you major in jeff?

RiceOwlJorge:
good luck building in manhattan

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
pero como te digo este escuela busca la diversidad

OliviaL3:
haha

RiceOwlJeff:
But Houston has a lot of major oil companies and aerospace corps, not to mention NASA right next door

PhuoctruongP:
what field of engineering is rice strong in?

RiceOwlAdi:
All of them really

RiceOwlStephanie:
The Study abroad program is amazing, as is the language department. We have a phenomenal Language Resource Center

RiceOwlJeff:
I'm looking at Mechanical or Electrical

PhuoctruongP:
i see

OliviaL3:
any of you planning to attend medical school?

RiceOwlTravis:
yeah, i'm actually taking three foreign languages right now. all of my teachers are amazing.

RiceOwlJeff:
Rice is the birthplace of nano, which branches in BioE, MECH, ELEC, and Materials

RiceOwlJorge -> RaulD:
just click on my name and private message

RiceOwlPhinga:
I am doing premed

OliviaL3:
THREE ?! Wow.

RiceOwlAshley:
I'm pre-med

RiceOwlLy:
I'm also premed

KimC:
what three?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
There is a Step One meeting for study abroad which keeps you in contact with an advisor and helps you plan your schedule

UniverseE -> RiceOwlLy:
Hi can any one give me information about Rice and well every thing related to it??

RaulD -> RiceOwlJorge:
yes, jorge can i ask what was your class rank and sat score when you applied to rice, just to know what I'm dealing with, if that's ok with you.

GiavannaR:
I'm trying to decide between majoring in aerospace engineering and physics & astronomy, and I am leaning towards the latter. Can you minor in an engineering program?

RiceOwlPhinga:
there are soooo many premed here at rice!

OliviaL3:
What classes do you take? Since I know Rice doesn't really have a "medical program" set for students.

RiceOwlJorge -> RaulD:
kk

OliviaL3:
well i mean there are medical courses

RiceOwlJorge -> RaulD:
don't remember sat. #3rank

PhuoctruongP:
when I go to other colleges' chat rooms, people just say the same about their programs. But what do you think is the most distinguished feature of Rice's Engineering?

OliviaL3:
but what do you generally take

RiceOwlAshley:
There are pre-med requirements

RiceOwlJorge -> RaulD:
seriously don't worry about it

RiceOwlLy:
Most premed major in Biochemistry

RaulD -> RiceOwlJorge:
do you remember gpa

RiceOwlJeff:
Rice doesn't offer an aerospace engineering _Major_, but you can specialize in that under Mechanical

OliviaL3:
oh ok

RiceOwlPhinga:
there are premed clubs and organizations at Rice

RiceOwlAshley:
Like Gen Chem, Organic Chem, Intro Bio, an upper level Bio class, and other things

RiceOwlJorge -> RaulD:
i was thinking the same thing. But i just poured my heart out in to the essay and it took over

RiceOwlLy:
but it really doesn't matter what major you are if you're premed

OliviaL3:
what is your favorite thing about rice's residential college system?

RiceOwlJorge -> RaulD:
well gpa's vary by school

KimC:
If you had to pick one thing Rice is the best at, what would that be?

RiceOwlTravis:
you can't minor in engineering degrees, but you can double with something else.

RiceOwlJorge -> RaulD:
but it was good, lol

AdalynB:
is there a decent history program at Rice?

RiceOwlJocelyn:
your res college is like your family

KimC:
or best known for?

RiceOwlJorge:
MARTEL!

RiceOwlEnrique:
is not a college

RiceOwlAdi:
residential college system

NathanielC3:
What type of advance placement courses for college credit does Rice accept? (that is if they do accept any.)

JosephO:
Was that a Tales of Symphonia reference (oops, if that was a tad bit too nerdy)?

"

UniverseE:
Hi can any one give me information about Rice and well every thing related to it??

"

RiceOwlTravis:
yeah, the history department has amazing professors. look up dr. zammito he teaches some classes that literally get a round of applause after each lecture.

RiceOwlAdi:
No not at all joseph

RiceOwlPhinga:
Rice accept ap scores 4 and above

RiceOwlStephanie:
My favorite thing about the residential system is that it allows your college to become your family. You live, eat, and sleep with the same people, and you are not segregated by classification or major.

RiceOwlAshley:
Martel is a residential college here

RiceOwlAshley:
Except not

RiceOwlAdi:
well that is debatable

GiavannaR:
is there an orchestra for students who are not music majors? i plan to continue playing my instrument in college.

RiceOwlEnrique:
yea it really isn't

AdalynB:
hey are any of you history majors?

RiceOwlJorge:
except MARTEL IS THE BEST

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
Nathaniel...http://registrar.rice.edu/content.aspx?id=146

RiceOwlAdi:
You will learn this very quickly guys (in terms of res college system and the rivalries)

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
this shows the ap scores

NathanielC3:
Oh Ok thanks

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:

LuzR1:
is it true that

RiceOwlStephanie:
Yes, there is a Rice Symphonic Band and several others that are for non-majors. There is also the MOB.

RiceOwlJorge:
google, the best college ever. Literally, see what happens

LuzR1:
Rice accepts only Physics C AP scores?

PhuoctruongP:
what make rice engineering stand out from other schools' programs?

PhuoctruongP:
like cornell, duke

OliviaL3:
how are the extracurriculars like at rice? are there tons of clubs ?

RiceOwlJeff:
No, Rice accepts Physics B scores too

RiceOwlStephanie:
Rice accepts any AP scores that are a score of 4 or higher

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
They take either physics C or B

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
si parece que sabes lo que estas haciendo no te tienes que preoccupar tanto

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
you can't receive credit for both

LuzR1:
ok thanks Jeff

JosephO:
If I qualify for a credit exemption under the AP exam, but for the corresponding IB exam score lower than the required, does that nullify the credit?

RiceOwlJeff:
but to place out of PHYS 101, you need the calculus based course

RiceOwlAdi:
Yeah there's lots of clubs and if there is something that isn't here you can start your own club

LuzR1:
ok

RiceOwlJorge:
clubs=http://dir.yahoo.com/Regional/U_S__States/Texas/Cities/Houston/Education/College_and_University/Private/Rice_University/Clubs_and_Organizations/

OliviaL3:
Do students generally have time for clubs or focus more on their studies?

RiceOwlStephanie:
You get one or the other, but one doesn't nullify the other.

RiceOwlTravis:
there are an absolute ton of extracurriculars. just about any sport you can imagine, religious clubs, environmental, anything you can imagine. it's also really easy to make your own club if you want to.

AdalynB:
does Rice have a good history department?

RiceOwlAshley:
You'll find time to manage both

RiceOwlAdi:
http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~stact/clubs.html

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
Rice no es unas de esas escuelas que solo mira en las calificaciones de tus examenes

RiceOwlStephanie:
Yes, Rice has a good history department

RiceOwlAshley:
You should not be swamped in your studies if your time management skills are good

PhuoctruongP:
anyone?

OliviaL3:
Thanks

RiceOwlStephanie:
What was your question?

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
Esa es una diferencia clave entre las universidades de aqui, y las de Mexico.

JosephO:
How good is the observatory (astronomy not music) at rice?

PhuoctruongP:
what make rice engineering stand out from other schools' programs?

PhuoctruongP:
i.e.: duke, northwestern, which are often considered on the same par with rice

RiceOwlTravis:
the observatory is good enough for the astro classes. honestly, in the city, you can't make great observations because of all the light.

RiceOwlAdi:
Smaller student:faculty ratio from what I understand

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
pero bueno cambiemos de tema; eres un freshman right enrique

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
what is your major?

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
si como te a dicho no solo se trata de las calificaciones pero de lo que puedes traer a la escuela

RiceOwlJeff:
Accessibility of professors, ability to diversify your learning (i.e. just because you're an engineer doesn't mean you can't minor in Business), research opportunities

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
somos como una familia

KimC:
Is there CLEP tests? Also, what subject of study would you say is Rice best for? engineering?

RaulD -> RiceOwlJorge:
jorge are you hispanic?

RiceOwlStephanie:
No

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
yo estoy estudiando espanol y chemica

RiceOwlJorge -> RaulD:
did my name give it away?

RiceOwlJorge:
Does anyone have any specific questions about transfer credit, business or cognitive sciences? if so click on my name and select private chat

OliviaL3:
Rice has competitive students. So, do students generally help out each other or are they mostly focused on their own studies and excelling on their own?

RiceOwlJorge:
i also have tips on being awesome at martel

RiceOwlAdi:
Anyone have questions about polisci?

RiceOwlAdi:
oxymoron

RiceOwlLy:
rice is all around great, but I've heard that the music department and the sciences

RiceOwlStephanie:
Help out each other a lot!

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
Cognitive studies.

RiceOwlTravis:
rice is best for whatever you want to study. there are tons of engineers, but everybody likes what they're studying.

NathanielC3:
I seen the AP and IB page, but just to make sure (without sounding repetitive), Does Rice recognize students who've taken KAP classes for college credit?

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
Is that part of the psychology dept

PhuoctruongP:
what other features of rice make u guys ranked Rice high in your college list? Is rice admission easier for QB finalists?

RiceOwlStephanie:
No

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
excelente y como son los profesores y el ambiente en Rice?

RiceOwlJorge -> OliviaL3:
no, cognitive sciences is an interdisciplinary major

RaulD -> RiceOwlJorge:
kinda

PhuoctruongP:
I'm trying to finalize my questbridge list

RaulD -> RiceOwlJorge:
so are you?

RiceOwlJorge -> OliviaL3:
psyc, computer sci, ling, neuro, phil and one more

RiceOwlAdi:
The extra essays help you express yourself

RiceOwlAdi:
so in that sense yes

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
I liked rice b/c the professors are easy to talk to

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
los profe's son muy sinceros y siempre estan alli para ayudarte

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
and everyone here wants to help

RiceOwlJorge -> RaulD:
:-p

RiceOwlJorge -> RaulD:
yes

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
those listed are...

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
?

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
solo les dices que necesitas ayuda y luego te dicen cuando

RiceOwlAdi:
Smaller school, residential college system, chill people

RiceOwlAdi:
etc

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
interdisciplinary majors..?

RiceOwlJorge -> OliviaL3:
http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~cognsci/

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
que gran facultad

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
rice es una escuela muy "chill"

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
enrique de donde eres?

RiceOwlJorge -> OliviaL3:
interdisciplanary means within more than one department

PhuoctruongP:
it's really hard for me to differentiate college from college these days. They all say the same thing

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
todos son muy amables

JosephO:
how conservative/liberal/politically charged is the campus?

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
yo soy de chicago

RiceOwlAdi:
It's pretty toned down I would say

RiceOwlLy:
rice is pretty small compared to the other universities so the feeling is very tight knit. Besides that, the unique college residency system really help facilitate the feeling. So, rice is competitive, but not cutthroat.

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
pero mis papa es de mexico

RiceOwlJocelyn:
moderate

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
how do u like ur courses

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
how are the professors

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
monterrey

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
y mi mama de zacatecas

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
Pues yo quiero estudio bioquimica y biologia celular, y pues quiero irme a medicina y aplicar a rice balyor medical scholars program si soy haceptado a rice.

RiceOwlTravis:
the campus full of all kinds, and some people get really into political activism. others are hardly aware they can vote.

RiceOwlJorge -> OliviaL3:
very interesting, only one off them is too much h/w and the profs are all great

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
are they intimidating

RaulD -> RiceOwlTed:
Hi ted

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
Hi Raul

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
yea y aunque no te accepten in en programa baylor tienes un futuro seguro con una diploma de esta escuela

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlJorge:
??

RaulD -> RiceOwlTed:
can i ask what is your major

RiceOwlAdi:
Other questions?

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
I am a Poli. Sci. Econ double

JosephO -> RiceOwlPin-Fang:
hi!

OliviaL3:
what would you say is the biggest diff between college life and high school life? (any advice?)

RiceOwlPin-Fang -> JosephO:
hi!

RiceOwlAshley:
Freedom!

RiceOwlJorge -> OliviaL3:
nah, very open atmosphere

RaulD -> RiceOwlTed:
nice

RiceOwlPin-Fang -> JosephO:
:-D

JosephO -> RiceOwlPin-Fang:
Are you all sitting in a room? Or is this from the dorms :D?

RiceOwlAdi:
No parents to tell you what to do, more responsibility, etc

NathanielC3:
What is the thing you enjoy most about Rice University?

RiceOwlAshley:
Everything is up to you basically

RiceOwlPin-Fang -> JosephO:
all sitting in a room

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
Thank you. What are you thinking of majoring in?

RaulD -> RiceOwlTed:
so from your perspective was it difficult to get into rice

RiceOwlEnrique:
OWEEK!

RiceOwlAdi:
Classes, residential college system

RiceOwlStephanie:
Everything

RiceOwlJeff:
Meeting the people

RaulD -> RiceOwlTed:
and did you apply to other universities as well

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
Study abroad and language program!

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
It was, the entire admissions process was long and strenuous, but it was really worth it.

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
I applied to 15 other schools.

RiceOwlJorge:
the best is martel, the hammock under the martel tree, and the awesome technology this place is loaded with.

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
Enrique de pura curiosidad aplicaste a otras universidades ademas de rice

KimC:
how is the language program?

JosephO:
How easy it is to spread word about activities and stuff outside your own group of people (lets say one wants to organize an event).

RiceOwlTravis:
whatever jorge. all the colleges have hammocks and such.

JosephO:
?* question mark not period, whoops.

RiceOwlAdi:
Facebook, flyers, etc

LuzR1:
how are the labs(like for chem and bio)?

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
si

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
UChicago

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
The language program is really good. Everyone who want to take languages are people who really want to learn the language b/c it's not a req.

RaulD -> RiceOwlTed:
can you tell some of the other schools that you applied to and if you got accepted

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
Stanford

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
Yale

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
Northwestern

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
Upenn

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
The professors are also really qualified.

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
Tulane

RiceOwlTravis:
it is definitely easy. the rules for posting flyers and such are pretty lax.

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
Drexel

RiceOwlLy:
The bios labs are pretty hardcore.

RiceOwlAshley:
I'm taking Chem and Bio, but labs don't start until next week so I don't know

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
i withdrew my applications after i was accepted into rice

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
so i only got into UChicago

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
Drexel

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
Tulane

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
and Rice

JosephO:
For those from Houston, is Houston any more interesting when you attend Rice (more freedom = find more places)?

KimC:
the main language I would like to learn is Latin. would you know any specifics about it?

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
i cuales te aceptaron si se puede saber

RiceOwlTravis:
the labs might be hard, but it's because we're at a world-class institution.

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
I ended up getting into UNC Chapel-Hill, GW, Miami (OH)

RiceOwlLy:
It's definitely not your average high school labs. Basically, you're taught the basic techniques, but they advance it so that you're required to connect different concepts together. and you're taught how to write a real research paper

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
I got waitlisted at a bunch of school.

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
oie y aplicaste early decison or regular decision

LuzR1:
interesting thanks

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
Tulane, Claremont McKenna, Georgetown, Pomona, Emory

NathanielC3:
What were some of the other schools you applied to, and what made you choose Rice University over those other schools?

RiceOwlLy:
i would say though that it definitely prepares you for research in actual labs

RiceOwlTravis:
i'm in latin right now. there's usually about one section per year and it's not hard to get in to. it starts really easy and builds up. tons of fun in there.

RaulD -> RiceOwlTed:
ohh

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
i was only a finalist but rice gave me the option to apply early decision and i knew this was the school for me

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
Houston is cool...even if you've seen most of the places. There are also a lot of places I've been to at O-week that I've never seen before in my 15 years here

RiceOwlAdi:
I applied to Emory, Penn, Chicago, Yale, etc...I chose Rice because it was a small school, great school, res. college system, and it was a lot cheaper for me

RiceOwlAdi:
(they are very generous with aid)

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
Once I got into Rice, I said screw the other schools, and ignored them completely.

RaulD -> RiceOwlTed:
did you apply early decison or regular decison, and which one do you recommend.

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
I applied RD, I wasn't ready to commit to one school.

LuzR1:
jobs on campus?

NathanielC3:
Is it possible to begin a student club at Rice?

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
If you are sure you want to go to a certain school, apply ED.

RiceOwlAshley:
It's very possible

RiceOwlTravis:
i have two jobs right now. i work at coffeehouse (which is amazingly fun) and am about to get a work study at the library.

LuzR1:
cool

RaulD -> RiceOwlTed:
Did you receive a good financial aid package

RiceOwlLy:
there are tutoring work study jobs too

JosephO:
How feasible is a job off campus?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
There is a clubs office on campus and you can talk to the people in there that can help you start a club.

RiceOwlStephanie:
It is possible to start a club, but you need to make sure that there isn't already a club that exists.

OliviaL3:
can rice students balance academic work and outside activities

GiavannaR:
for work study, do you get to choose your job or is it chosen for you?

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
Yeah. It was awesome and definitely one of the reasons I ended up attending

RiceOwlStephanie:
easily

RiceOwlLy:
you get to choose your job

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
Enrique recibiste un buen paquete finaciero para esta universidad

OliviaL3:
so it's not all about academics?

RiceOwlAshley:
Nope

RiceOwlAdi:
no

RiceOwlStephanie:
definitely not

RiceOwlTed:
Nope, There's a lot more to Rice

OliviaL3:
That's awesome.

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
si la escuela da mucho dinero

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
demasiado

RiceOwlAshley:
Study hard, play hard

JosephO:
How's the religious atmosphere?

GiavannaR:
what are some interesting cultural activities in Houston?

RaulD -> RiceOwlTed:
Rices tuition is about 42000 dollars , about how much did rice cover, if its ok with you to share that info.

RiceOwlStephanie:
There are lots of religious based clubs and lots of churches close to campus. You can be as involved as you want to be.

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
I'm paying about 6500 a year.

RiceOwlAdi:
there's lots of museums (which you get free passes to) and generally Houston has all of the activities that any big city would have

KunaalP:
what classes do u have to take freshman year?

RiceOwlAdi:
various restaurants, plays, etc

RiceOwlAshley:
you have a choice

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
There are cultural dances and music that is free at the miller theater

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
But that's not all paid to the school, because they factor in things like transportation and living expenses

RiceOwlAdi:
No required classes, just distribution requirements

RiceOwlAshley:
There are no required classes here.

RiceOwlTravis:
spanish dances at miller outdoor theater, a turkish band usually comes in the spring. just about anything you can expect in a major city.

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
Rice cuesta aproximadamente 42000 dolares, se puede saber con cuanto te ayudo su paquete finaciero.

RiceOwlStephanie:
There are no required classes unless you can't test out of Freshman Comp

OliviaL3:
how are the advisors at rice?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
there are only distribution requirements

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
oie enrique tu recibiste la questbridge college match

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
12 credits in each distribution

RiceOwlStephanie:
They are amazing and really willing to work with you

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
So I took a 3000 loan this year, and have not sent a dollar to the school

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
no solo era finalista

KunaalP:
what is freshman comp?

OliviaL3:
distribution requirements... meaning requirements for majors?

JosephO:
How's the commute to the Woodlands Pavilion for a concert?

NamT:
Is the food good served in the dorms good?

RiceOwlTravis:
composition. it's a writing proficiency test. just a simple essay. they give you everything you need

RiceOwlAdi:
Yeah the servery food is pretty good. lots of variety

RiceOwlTed:
The food in the dorms is pretty solid.

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
There are 3 distribution req. one for sciences/math, the other for social science, and the other for humanities

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
o sea si recibiste el college match, entraste a rice a travez de questbridge

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
it's so students have a more rounded education here

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
and get a taste of everything

RiceOwlStephanie:
Distribution requirements are 12 hours in each of three categories: Humanities, Natural Science, and Science. They are required, but you can choose which classes to take within the categories.

OliviaL3:
a liberal arts education basically?

NamT:
Can you explain dorm life? How many roommates do we get? What is the housing system like?

RiceOwlStephanie:
Who was asking about the Woodlands commute?

KunaalP:
how many credit hours are u allowed to take each semester in the first year?

RiceOwlStephanie:
As many as you want

RiceOwlAdi:
15 is standard

RiceOwlAshley:
Average is 15

GiavannaR:
what kinds of intramural sports are at Rice? I would like to do tennis.

JosephO:
me!

RiceOwlAshley:
Some take up to 20, as low as 12

RiceOwlAdi:
There is tennis

OliviaL3:
how many classes does each student take generally

RiceOwlTravis:
yeah, it's a liberal arts requirement. or if you're already liberal arts, its a science requirement.

RiceOwlAdi:
15 credit hours (5 classes)

RaulD -> RiceOwlTed:
very nice indeed ted

RiceOwlStephanie:
Are you asking about the pavilion in The Woodlands?

JosephO:
woodlands commute - for concerts, up at the pavilion

RiceOwlStephanie:
like the city?

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
no

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
If you want to take more than 20 credits you may need special permission but it's easy to get.

OliviaL3:
a semester right? (AdiS)

JosephO:
I guess

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
yes.

RiceOwlAdi:
yeah

JosephO:
It's in the vicinity

KunaalP:
are there more professors or grads teaching, especially in the sciences?

RiceOwlTravis:
much more professors

RiceOwlStephanie:
There is a Woodlands Express that runs both ways, and I believe it takes about an hour.

RaulD -> RiceOwlTed:
you are a freshman right

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
Yeah

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
if you are a finalist you aren't necessarily matched

KunaalP:
is research easy to get into?

RiceOwlStephanie:
yes

OliviaL3:
do you talk to professors if you would like to do research?

RiceOwlLy:
research is basically a matter of talking to the professor

KunaalP:
what year do u have to announce a major?

RiceOwlLy:
email personally and then try to set up an interview time for research

RiceOwlStephanie:
sophomore year

OliviaL3:
how are the interviews for research?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
Yes. you can talk to any professor about their research and then ask to help with research

RaulD -> RiceOwlTed:
and how are professors there in Rice, are the classes challenging and interesting

RiceOwlStephanie:
Like job interviews

hoyinlamcolin:
what year do you prepare and take the MCAT?

RiceOwlCindy:
You can even do research for sociology!

RiceOwlLy:
there are also a lot of research opportunities to research in the medical center right next door

RiceOwlAshley:
So dress up nicely. No jeans.

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
The professors are some of the best I've had.

RiceOwlCindy:
It's not all science based research

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
ok

KunaalP:
do u have to do a language freshman year?

RiceOwlLy:
I would say take the mcat before junior year

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
I took college classes all through high school, I actually already have an Associates

JosephO:
Alright, thanks for all the answers :D - time to get off to do econ and physics homework .

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
entonces tu entraste a rice via la common application

RiceOwlStephanie:
No, languages aren't' required

RiceOwlAdi:
no language requirement

RiceOwlAshley:
Language classes aren't required

GiavannaR:
how far is johnson space center from campus?

RiceOwlCindy:
but I recommend languages

RiceOwlCindy:
I'm taking spanish and mandarin

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
So I've been in a lot of classes

RiceOwlStephanie:
30 minutes from campus

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
you can use your questbridge app as your regular application to rice

OliviaL3:
are there any cantonese courses?

RaulD -> RiceOwlTed:
Impressive

KunaalP:
what are the average ACT, SAT scores and GPA rice looks for?

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
it all depends on the school if they require the common app

RiceOwlStephanie:
I don't think so

RiceOwlCindy:
no official cantonese classes but student groups teach it

RiceOwlTravis:
there are plenty of cantonese speakers, though, so you can certainly keep it up.

GiavannaR:
does rice offer international business?

OliviaL3:
Sweet!

RiceOwlCindy:
like the Hong Kong Student Association

RiceOwlAshley:
Look up scores on collegeboard

KunaalP:
what is average freshman gpa?

hoyinlamcolin:
are the people in Houston friendly?

ReemaG:
is the competition at Rice "cut-throat?"

RiceOwlStephanie:
No

RiceOwlAshley:
The competition is low

OliviaL3:
what is the average sat score

RiceOwlTed:
Yes, the people in Texas are really friendly

RiceOwlAdi:
People cooperate a lot

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
There is no direct international business program...but you can do political science with a concentration in International relations and then double major with managerial studies or do a business minor

RiceOwlAshley:
People here will help you if you ask.

RiceOwlLy:
competition at rice is there definitely, but its not cutthroat

RiceOwlCindy:
I was born and raised in Houston and Rice students are overly friendly

RiceOwlAdi:
All of the sat info is on rice's admission site and on collegeboard

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
Thank you.

RiceOwlStephanie:
The competition is only to get in, after that, everyone just tries their hardest

ReemaG:
ohh okay, well that's a relief :)

RiceOwlTed -> RaulD:
What are you thinking of majoring in?

RiceOwlTravis:
the freshman gpa is going to be roughly equivalent to any other university. the work level is up to the quality of students.

RaulD -> RiceOwlTed:
I'm looking forward to meet you if i get accepted to rice; you see for me studying is everything, i don't study to pass classes i study to learn and understand the world we live in, i most definitely plan to enter the medical field

RiceOwlAdi:
yeah the gpa varies....like if you party all the time obviously you won't have a 4.0

OliviaL3:
SATs?

RaulD -> RiceOwlTed:
I'm going to major in biochemistry and cell biology

RiceOwlAshley:
You have to take them.

AdrianG:
I've heard from some friends that Rice is a "wet campus"

OliviaL3:
what's the avg score

RiceOwlCindy:
And the SAT IIs

KunaalP:
how long are the cafaterias and libraries open?

AdrianG:
is that rumor right?

RiceOwlAshley:
It is a wet campus.

RiceOwlAdi:
http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=2569&profileId=6

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
Supongo que tu lives on campus enrique

RiceOwlCindy:
library is 24/7 during weekdays!

RiceOwlCindy:
it's great

RiceOwlAshley:
O-Week is dry. Then when the upperclassmen move in.

GiavannaR:
when is O-Week and is that the best time to visit the campus?

RiceOwlAlbert:
but you don't have to drink if you don't want to

hoyinlamcolin:
how are you guys GPA right now?

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
yep me encanta

AdrianG:
is Rice like crazy wet with parties everyday or you just hear about parties going on often

RiceOwlAshley:
O-Week is when freshmen move in

RiceOwlTravis:
3.8 ish, i think, for me.

RiceOwlCindy:
i don't drink

RiceOwlAshley:
Visit during Owl Days

RyanZ:
What is the school with which you have the most intense rivalry? Has that school ever taken hostage of, maimed, damaged, or destroyed your owl mascot? If so, was there retaliation?

RiceOwlCindy:
there's people who don't drink too

AdrianG:
yeah i know

AdrianG:
I'm one of them

RiceOwlEnrique:
depends on the dorm or the floor

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
cuales son las ventajas de vivir en campus y que me recomiendas si yo vivo en houston

AdrianG:
oh okay

RiceOwlCindy:
I'm on the "quiet floor"

RiceOwlAshley:
I live on the party floor at my college. I don't drink, but it's fun to talk to people.

RiceOwlAdi:
Yeah really the parties are what you make of them...you don't have to

AdrianG:
well that's nice

RiceOwlAdi:
or you could party all day

RiceOwlAdi:
up to you

AdrianG:
lol

RiceOwlStephanie:
They try really hard to place you around people with similar attitudes as you do.

RiceOwlAdi:
yeah

OliviaL3:
each residential college has its own activities right?

RiceOwlStephanie:
Yes

RiceOwlAshley:
yes

RiceOwlAdi:
there's an extensive roommate questionnaire

RiceOwlTravis:
university of tulsa is our most intense rival. a&m once stole sammy the owl. look it up on wikipedia.

HieuL:
do you get into any trouble with roommate or some neighbor?

RiceOwlLy:
different colleges have different traditions

OliviaL3:
yea. how are your roommates?

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
estas cerca de todo y tienes tu propio cuarto y no necesitas decirle a tu's papas todo lo que haces

AdrianG:
are any of ya'll planning on going to see Brian Greene next month?

RiceOwlAdi:
awesome

RiceOwlTravis:
some people do, most don't. it's just a matter of how you get along with them. they try to pair you up with people you'll get along with.

KunaalP:
are u treated differently is u are a student applying thru quest bridge

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
I really like my roommates

KunaalP:
?

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
hey

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
hi

RiceOwlAdi:
what do you mean?

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
Brian Greene is coming to rice?

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
excelente

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
yeah

RiceOwlCindy:
I had 2 roommates -- one I talked to a lot and went to club activities with, the other we'll just say Hi in the morning

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
when where?

RyanZ:
What’s one fun Rice tradition that you will always remember?

RiceOwlAdi:
oweek

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
i love the elegant universe

RiceOwlAlbert:
oweek

HieuL:
that's sad

RiceOwlTed:
OWeek

OliviaL3:
are you paired with an freshman roommate to

RiceOwlAshley:
yes

OliviaL3:
*too?

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
I found out off the info site about the metro service for Rice students

RiceOwlTravis:
yes

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
ME TOO

RiceOwlStephanie:
There are extensive roommate questionnaires, so they do a pretty good job on making sure that you and your roommate will get along and that you are on a floor with people who have similar attitudes as you do

RiceOwlCindy:
it's a two-way street so you try your best

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
well at least the PBS special

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
can i get the link?

RiceOwlAdi:
yeah. my roommate is 23 but that is because he is an exchange student

RyanZ:
Haha I like that response!

hoyinlamcolin:
r there a lot of rich kids on campus ?

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
lemme look for it

RaulD -> RiceOwlEnrique:
gracias por tu tiempo enrique muchas gracias por todos tus sabios consejos, espero conocerte si entro a este excelente universidad, puesto que eres muy similar a mi

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
yea its amazing

HieuL:
where do you take shower, just curious because think about it just freak me out

RiceOwlAdi:
there are people of every background but nobody really talks about that here

RiceOwlEnrique -> RaulD:
claro que si

HieuL:
and cook

RiceOwlTed:
I have a private bathroom

RiceOwlCindy:
I had a roommate who is an international student

RiceOwlAshley:
My college have private bathrooms for doubles, so there

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
thanks

RiceOwlLy:
some colleges, like wiess have private bathroom

RiceOwlCindy:
that's pretty awesome

RiceOwlStephanie:
Some colleges have community bathrooms, some have suite bathrooms that are shared with four people

RiceOwlAdi:
yeah the new dorms have private bathrooms

RiceOwlAlbert:
yeah, duncan/mcmurtry have private bathrooms

OliviaL3:
do you have to clean the bathrooms.....

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
so does wiess

RiceOwlTravis:
yeah

OliviaL3:
take turns maybe?

RiceOwlAdi:
they come and clean the suite bathrooms

KunaalP:
r freshman allowed to bring a car?

RiceOwlTed:
No, they clean the bathrooms once a week

RiceOwlTravis:
all of the bathrooms are cleaned close to daily.

HieuL:
how do u manage to cook or just eat noodle

RiceOwlAdi:
there are serveries

OliviaL3:
oh ok..

RiceOwlStephanie:
Yes, freshmen can bring a car

RiceOwlEnrique:
each college has a kitchen

OliviaL3:
just curious :D

KunaalP:
and what are parking fees like?

RiceOwlCindy:
If ramen's your thing, go for it

HieuL:
is there a fridge

RiceOwlTravis:
there are also community kitchens you can use.

RiceOwlAshley:
Expensive.

RiceOwlAdi:
you can bring one if you want

RiceOwlCindy:
But there's soooo much food around

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
there is a fridge in the kitchen

RiceOwlStephanie:
parking is expensive

RiceOwlCindy:
it's buffet style

OliviaL3:
people usually go by bikes?

RiceOwlTed:
Yes, there's a lot of biking

RiceOwlStephanie:
a lot of people have bikes

RiceOwlCindy:
You won't need a car really

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
here ya go

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
http://students.rice.edu/students/RiceNightsMenu.asp

RiceOwlTravis:
free metro transportation during the school year

RiceOwlTed:
You will have at least one friend to bum rides off of. =)

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
I wish I could go

RiceOwlCindy:
Walking builds character

OliviaL3:
hahaha!

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
but i unfortunately have school, and live in Corpus Christi

KunaalP:
thank you very much for entertaining my question but i gotta go study for a physics test

ReemaG:
and muscles =)

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
so... yeah

RiceOwlAdi:
good luck

KunaalP:
bye

RiceOwlCindy:
buena suerte

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
o that sucks

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
but rice is amazing

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
I know

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
so you better apply

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
I am

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
good

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
any questions you have?

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
it excites me so much just thinking about possibly being matched

NathanielC3:
Thanks also for answering my small amount of questions. And thanks to the other high school students for asking questions that helped inform me in thing I didn't consider.

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
do you know if the number of matched students will increase this year?

ReemaG:
are the classes there taught by professors or TA's?

RiceOwlTravis:
mostly by professors. i've only had one TA

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
it usually increases every year

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
i personally wasn't matched

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
that's cool

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
but i'm here and loving every bit of it

RiceOwlTed:
TA's occasionally grade or lead smaller discussion groups

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
I'm sure

OliviaL3:
do you do a lot of discussions in class?

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
getting matched would be like a dream come true

RiceOwlCindy:
TA's are grad students

RiceOwlAdi:
depends on the class

RiceOwlStephanie:
90% are taught by faculty, 6% by grad students

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
if money is an issue rice gives sooooooooooooooooooooo much financial aid

RiceOwlLy:
even if grad students teach, they still teach very well

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
yeah

RiceOwlTravis:
smaller classes tend to be more discussion based.

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
i'm definitely going to need that

RiceOwlAshley:
Yup. Surprisingly, in my Chem class we have a lot of discussions

OliviaL3:
in chem?

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
yea i think if your parents make less than 80,000 dollars a year

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
I have a spanish class with only 7 people

RiceOwlCindy:
I've had a class where it's reading for hw and discussions in class

RiceOwlCindy:
and that was it

RiceOwlAshley:
Yes Chem

RiceOwlCindy:
Hi Jaira!

OliviaL3:
online discussions too?

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
then rice will meet 100% of your needs

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
whoa

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
yea

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
amazing

RiceOwlStephanie:
I don't think there are too many of those, but some do exist.

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
yeah

JairabiancaS:
Hello!

RiceOwlCindy:
I've had online discussions with students from universities in Mexico

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
i'm pretty speechless

RiceOwlStephanie:
Hi!

RiceOwlCindy:
Spanish class is awesome

OliviaL3:
wow.

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
lol

RiceOwlCindy:
We skype too

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
I didn't hear about that

OliviaL3:
that, i've never heard of

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
I know that some ivy-league schools have that but for $75K or less

RiceOwlTravis:
it's internet telephony

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
so wow

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
well i'm glad you know now

NamT:
How does the residential college system work?

RiceOwlCindy:
Hi Nam

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
mhmm

NamT:
hi

JairabiancaS:
Can you tell me what's the common routine of any of you (you know wake up, go to class, hang out at noon, library, those stuff)

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
how many schools did you rank during the process?

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
if you don't mind me asking?

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
http://financialaid.rice.edu/

LuzR1:
thanks everyone for questions and answers really appreciate it! :) i have to go now bye

RiceOwlAdi:
bye

RiceOwlCindy:
I'm not much of a morning person, so I chose late morning classes

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
i ranked 6 i think

RiceOwlAshley:
Depends on the days

RiceOwlCindy:
my first one is at 10am and I wake up in time for breakfast

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
i see

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
some LPAPS are at 8ish

JairabiancaS:
How about the most common days?

RiceOwlAshley:
MWF, wake up for 10 classes, lunch, 1 one class, hang out, dinner, study

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
so far I can definitely put two

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
and that'd be MIT and Rice

RiceOwlAdi:
yeah you can adjust your own schedule according to what you're used to

OliviaL3:
i wish high school will let you do that...

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
yea

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
i put uchicago

RiceOwlTravis:
one more year, olivia.

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
stanford

RiceOwlAdi:
you are much freer in college

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
yale

RiceOwlAshley:
Hang out/study/sleep after that

JairabiancaS:
Now I'm getting more excited for college

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
upenn

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
and northwestern

RiceOwlCindy:
yay!

RiceOwlAdi:
:-)

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
but i withdrew

OliviaL3:
i'm getting more excited for Rice.

RiceOwlStephanie:
You are randomly assigned to a college (kind of like the sorting hat in Harry Potter), and that is the college you live with for all four years. The college becomes like your family, the Masters (A professor's family who lives next to the college) become like your parents, and the Resident Associates (faculty who live in the dorms) become like your favorite aunts/uncles.

RiceOwlAshley:
Good! Apply here

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
what?

RiceOwlCindy:
I like college 1000X better than high school

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
all of 'em after getting into rice

RiceOwlCindy:
take the square root of that

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
oh

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
I see

JairabiancaS:
What kind of extracurriculars (clubs, organizations, etc)?

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
yea it was my number one

JairabiancaS:
I would. :p

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
yeah

RiceOwlTravis:
anything you can think of. triathlon, chess, student government, environmental club. you can make up something if it's not here already.

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
i'd have it as number one, but MIT is really cool too AND it's non-binding

JairabiancaS:
I'll be back.

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
and it doesn't hurt to try

RiceOwlCindy:
I wrote for my high school newspaper and continued it in college -- and you get paid per article!

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
to get in

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
yea very true

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
I really can't wait to schedule an interview

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
what exactly are you looking for out of the university you attend?

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
well

OliviaL3:
i really hope i get into rice...

RiceOwlAshley:
We hope you do too

OliviaL3:
it seems perfect from what you guys are saying...

RiceOwlStephanie:
Wish you luck!

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
first thing is probably cost, but close right after that are the majors offered

RiceOwlAdi:
it's really awesome here!

RiceOwlAdi:
i'm sure you will do fine

RiceOwlTravis:
i call it heaven.

RiceOwlAlbert:
Rice is perfect

OliviaL3:
yall are getting me excited!

OliviaL3:
:D

RiceOwlAdi:
:D

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
all colleges have the general stuff

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
yea rice is great on cost

RiceOwlLy:
there is also a microfinance club, a HuMed club ( international medical aid), and really other interesting things

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
but do you plan on doing a lot of activities during college

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
or into the "social" scene

ReemaG:
are you guys all from houston?

RiceOwlCindy:
ethnic clubs too like vietnamese student association, black student association

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
well, i'd like to try to walk onto the track team, but I'll see how that goes

RiceOwlAshley:
I'm from Kansas actually

RiceOwlTed:
I'm from Cleveland

RiceOwlAdi:
louisiana

RiceOwlAlbert:
I am from Austin

RiceOwlStephanie:
I'm from the San Antonio region

RiceOwlCindy:
Houston

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
houston

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
if not freshman year, I'll try again

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
social.... hmmm

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
I'll probably join some kind of ethnic club or something

RiceOwlCindy:
Hi Travis

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
that's good

RiceOwlTravis:
wassup! another travis!

TravisC:
Hello Rice students!

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
do you know if there's a Tae Kwon Do club?

RiceOwlAshley:
Hello prospie!

TravisC:
lol, another hopeful RiceOwlTravis

RiceOwlAdi:
sup broseph?

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
i'm not sure

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
aw man

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
but i'm pretty sure they actually have a class

RiceOwlAdi:
any questions?

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
they have a lot of martial arts under the gym classes

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
whoa man, that'd be so cool

JairabiancaS:
I'm back. I forgot to ask, do you know how many people leave Rice after freshman year?

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
(LPAP's)

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
I'd love to get back into it

RiceOwlTravis:
about 93% come-back

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
93-4% retention rate

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
yea its easy to make clubs

RiceOwlAdi:
what they said

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
or find ppl who are interested in it

TravisC:
Well, I live in Texas so I know what the atmosphere is like. I understand Rice is more of a liberal college (politically speaking.) About 23% are accepted. What is dorm life like? Are any of you polisci/philosophy majors? If so, how do you like the departments?

NamT:
If I do go to Rice and have relatives in Dallas, would it be practical to commute from Houston to Dallas during the weekends or is it too far?

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
cool

OliviaL3:
how many years are dorms guaranteed to student? if at all.

RiceOwlAdi:
i am polisci major

RiceOwlTed:
Poli. Sci. Major here!

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
3 year guarantee

RiceOwlCindy:
Maybe you can commute every other week or so

RiceOwlCindy:
It's about 4 hours to drive one way

RiceOwlLy:
I'm also from DFW so yeah, its practically go back and forth

OliviaL3:
but can you choose to stay all four years

OliviaL3:
but you have to pay huh?

RiceOwlStephanie:
commute depends on you. If you want to go every weekend you can.

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
yep

RiceOwlAdi:
for what?

TravisC:
How do you feel about the PoliSci department? What opportunities have you been offered that you feel would be different from attending, say, UT?

RiceOwlTravis:
on-campus space is guaranteed for a little more than three years. some people get on all four years, some people go off for one year.

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
so about how many students are freshman

RiceOwlCindy:
It's nice to go somewhere close during short breaks like thanksgiving

RiceOwlLy:
carpooling with friends are always fun

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
this year we have 903

RiceOwlAdi:
My classes are good so far

JairabiancaS:
oh okay. That's nice. How many of you here double majors?

NamT:
How many people are in your graduating class?

RiceOwlAdi:
There's a lot of class offerings

RiceOwlTravis:
linguistics/history major

RiceOwlAdi:
and the professors are very knowledgeable and accessible

RiceOwlCindy:
I'm doubling in sociology and policy studies

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
and about how many applied, do you know?

RiceOwlTed:
Double Major, Poli and Econ

OliviaL3:
what's the diff between sociology n psychology

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
over 11,000

OliviaL3:
well never mind

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
It's really easy to switch majors too!

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
oh gosh

OliviaL3:
that was a dumb question.

TravisC:
Is it easy to double major? How easy would it be to 2x major in say PoliSci and Chemistry?

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
yea we are one hot item

RiceOwlCindy:
hey my mom asked that question once....

OliviaL3:
well i kinda see the difference

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
yep

OliviaL3:
but it's almost similar

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
lol

RiceOwlCindy:
sociology is about groups

OliviaL3:
i think..

RiceOwlCindy:
psych is strictly how an individual thinks

TravisC:
Anyone know if Rice has a debate team?

OliviaL3:
oh ok

RiceOwlAdi:
yes there is one

RiceOwlTed:
Yeah

RiceOwlCindy:
Yes!

RiceOwlCindy:
and Model UN

JairabiancaS:
How about Triple Major?

RiceOwlTravis:
nationally ranked debate team.

RiceOwlTed:
And mock trial

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
so it is hard to double major across different schools

RiceOwlAshley:
yes you can triple major

TravisC:
Cause I compete in UIL and TFA in Texas, so debate is a pretty big thing for me.

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
depends

RiceOwlCindy:
and minors too!

RiceOwlTed:
If your in social sciences it's possible

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
engineering can be harder

RiceOwlAdi:
you get to try out in the first 2 weeks

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
but i'm double majoring in spanish and chem

NamT:
Around how many people are in your class?

RiceOwlAdi:
900

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
cool

RiceOwlCindy:
or individual classrooms?

RiceOwlAdi:
matriculating

TravisC:
What is residential life like?

RiceOwlAshley:
Awesome.

RiceOwlAdi:
freedom

JairabiancaS:
That's kinda crazy if you have triple major and minor. That would probably take 5-6 years to graduate

RiceOwlCindy:
I have 8 in my language classes

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
I'd like to major in cognitive studies if admitted, but electrical engineering would be a close second

NamT:
what is the biggest amount of people you have had in any classes?

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
and if possible I'd do both

RiceOwlTravis:
residential life is awesome. you can find anything that you want to do with people at your college.

RiceOwlAdi:
my econ class is like 150

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
well electrical would be easier

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
chem e

RiceOwlAshley:
I have 160 in my calc class

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
or biochem take up the most time

OliviaL3:
when do u fill out forms for financial aid

RiceOwlAdi:
january i think

OliviaL3:
after you apply

RiceOwlCindy:
Jan. 1

OliviaL3:
n get in?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
january for fafsa

RiceOwlCindy:
FAFSA

TravisC:
How do you feel it would affect admissions (from your experience) if you scored exceptionally well on 3 sections of the ACT, and did good, but not fantastic on one section?

RiceOwlTravis:
most classes are more along the lines of 10-20 students. it's just the big introductory science classes that reach three digits.

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
i see

NamT:
What is the student to teacher ratio?

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
0.209027777777778

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlPin-Fang:
so you apply first

RiceOwlAdi:
scores aren't the most important thing

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
how are english classes

JairabiancaS:
So if introductory science classes are big, do you recommend then to take AP to get out of those?

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlPin-Fang:
n then fill out financial aid forms

RiceOwlAdi:
don't worry about it too much

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlPin-Fang:
for all colleges?

RiceOwlPin-Fang -> OliviaL3:
yes.

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlPin-Fang:
in january?

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
i'm not in any but i hear they are great

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlPin-Fang:
oh ok.

LokL:
How's the food around Rice?

RiceOwlPin-Fang -> OliviaL3:
the fafsa starts january 1st

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlPin-Fang:
wouldn't that be a lot of forms

TravisC:
Do you feel as if individual achievement has some important weight?

RiceOwlAdi:
pretty good

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
I have a great... disliking to it now

RiceOwlAlbert:
food is good

RiceOwlPin-Fang -> OliviaL3:
no

RiceOwlAdi:
lots of variety

RiceOwlAdi:
yes

RiceOwlAshley:
Yes. Though if you want to be pre-med, you may want to take the chem class for some med schools

RiceOwlTed:
There's lots of options right around Rice

NamT:
what do you say is the most important aspect then? GPA, essays, or test scores?

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
hmmm

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
freshman are required to take an essay writing

RiceOwlPin-Fang -> OliviaL3:
it's one and you can send to all

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
class

RiceOwlAdi:
essays

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlPin-Fang:
oh ok

RiceOwlPin-Fang -> OliviaL3:
they're online

RiceOwlAdi:
by far

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
i see

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
if you don't test out of it

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlPin-Fang:
so that's not too bad

RiceOwlAshley:
Essays are the best.

RiceOwlAdi:
they are what distinguish you from everyone else

RiceOwlPin-Fang -> OliviaL3:
you also need the CSS

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
oh

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlPin-Fang:
i was expecting a whole other application process

RiceOwlPin-Fang -> OliviaL3:
the sooner the better

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlPin-Fang:
css is earlier rite

RiceOwlCindy:
I concur

RiceOwlAdi:
helpful hint: don't procrastinate on them

TravisC:
What political opportunities are there?

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
ok

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
but I'm not an english person but it helps to know how to write well

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
yeah

RiceOwlPin-Fang -> OliviaL3:
there are different deadlines for each college

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
especially for college

OliviaL3 -> RiceOwlPin-Fang:
for the css?

RiceOwlAdi:
I'm sure you could intern, volunteer at campaigns, etc

RiceOwlPin-Fang -> OliviaL3:
and I think for qb you need it earlier

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
when essays dominate the curriculum

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
oh gosh

RiceOwlAdi:
also there is the baker institute on campus which brings guest speakers and that kind of thing

RiceOwlPin-Fang -> OliviaL3:
yes

NamT:
I have to go now, thank you everyone for your help! I will definitely be applying!

JairabiancaS:
Do you think its good for application if I put a scientific report I've written?

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
its not that bad

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
writing is SO tedious

RiceOwlCindy:
A lot of people intern at City Hall

RiceOwlTravis:
we get local politicians coming to the baker institute all the time.

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
or at least I think so

RiceOwlAdi:
and national/international as well

RiceOwlAdi:
sure jairabianca

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
yea i'm a math science type of guy

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
same here

RiceOwlLy:
Condoleezza Rice came last year

RiceOwlCindy:
I saw her!

TravisC:
One problem I am facing: at UT Austin I have an internship available at the state capital because of connections that I have, along with success in debate. Do you think I would be able to find similar opportunities at Rice?

JairabiancaS:
Just call me jaira for short.'

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
so how bout the food

RiceOwlAdi:
yes

RiceOwlAdi:
houston is a big city...plenty of elected officials

RiceOwlTed:
Internships won't be a problem here

RiceOwlCindy:
Yes! B/c professors here are also connected

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
is it pretty good?

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
we have pretty good food

RiceOwlAdi:
and the aforementioned baker institute

RiceOwlPin-Fang:
:-)

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
depends on where you go

RiceOwlAdi:
(definitely check out the baker institute)

JairabiancaS:
Do you have any science internships near the area?

TravisC:
lol. Thank you very much!

RiceOwlTravis:
no problem

RiceOwlAdi:
the medical center is right across the street

RiceOwlCindy:
Houstonians have high expectations of Rice students

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
each residential college has its own servery

RiceOwlCindy:
or so I'm told

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
I see

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
well some share but have there own common room to eat

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
North and south are amazing

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
I'll take note of that

RiceOwlLy:
the medial center ( largest in the nation) is a great resource

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
lovett is pretty decent

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
do you eat off campus much?

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
but within two years we are getting a brand new one

RiceOwlStephanie:
We will be shutting down in a few minutes, so if you have any questions, ask them now!

TravisC:

saturday nights we don't get food

RiceOwlStephanie:
No

RiceOwlStephanie:
No problem

RiceOwlAdi:

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:

RiceOwlTravis:

RiceOwlAdi:

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:

RiceOwlStephanie:

RiceOwlAshley:
A grad student teaches my English class

RiceOwlPin-Fang:

RiceOwlEnrique -> AdrianG:
a lot of ppl go there

AdrianG -> RiceOwlEnrique:
that's cool

OliviaL3:

RiceOwlTravis:
