AdmissionLaura:
Welcome!

JairabiancaS:
Thank you

AdmissionLaura:
Questions, anyone?

AdmissionLaura:
Bueller...Bueller...

JairabiancaS:
Okay this is what first came to mind. Does Rice have any specific priority on admissions? Like essay, extracurricular or anything?

AdmissionLaura:
nope

AdmissionLaura:
we look at everything equally - it's a more holistic process for review

hoyinlamcolin:
Is there a specific GPA required for admission?

hoyinlamcolin:
or recommended?

AdmissionLaura:
Nope - no specific GPA, either

JairabiancaS:
Then what's the average GPA of people who gets in?

AdmissionLaura:
There are some schools that don't calculate GPA or class rank (shocking, I know!), so we don't use that

AhmedA1:
how about sat and act?

AdmissionLaura:
We DO have a middle 50% for the standardized tests

HoangH:
Are there any required classes to be accepted into Rice?

hoyinlamcolin:
what if you are not the perfect person without straight As?

hoyinlamcolin:
if you have a B or a C

AdmissionJessica:
welcome reginaL, hannahW5 and hoangH!

hoyinlamcolin:
is that all right?

hoyinlamcolin:
but pretty srong ECA

HannahW5:
Okay, I have a general question. When you apply through the Questbridge program to Rice, is that considered a regular decision application? And do you fill out the regular application for Rice too?

AdmissionLaura:
The middle 50% for admitted students: SAT was 1390-1530 (on the 1600 scale) and the ACT was 31-34

AdmissionJessica:
welcome christopherC2

AdmissionLaura:
And you don't need straight As...

AdmissionJessica:
hi LaganT!

AdmissionLaura:
I'd rather see you challenge yourself academically and make a few Bs than just worry about straight As

hoyinlamcolin:
what about a C?

AhmedA1:
what if only my sat meets the middle 50, is there still a chance i can get in?

ReginaL:
what if instead of taking an extra AP class I took a difficult elective, is that still challenging myself

AdmissionLaura:
If you've got lower than a B, it's still not impossible to get in...but I'd like to know a little bit more about why you got a lower grade.

KarenC:
just wondering. last year, how many people were matched with rice?

AdmissionJessica:
welcome everyone!

HoangH:
Will taking a class like Senior Project help me get noticed and be more impressive than another class such as World History?

KarenC:
and how many through RD from questbridge?

AhmedA1:
i took ap classes and i am b-c student is theres still a chance?

hoyinlamcolin:
ok thanks alot

AdmissionJessica:
six people were matched last year, but it varies from year to year

AdmissionLaura:
When we look at a transcript, we want to know that you took the most challenging courses available

hoyinlamcolin:
a will explain it through the essay

OliviaL3:
HI everyone

HannahW5:
Six out of how many applicants?

AdmissionJessica:
there were a few students in early decision and about fifty through regular decision

AdmissionLaura:
We took 6 out of the matched Quest Scholars

RyanZ:
i have taken a class at the university of oregon and plan on taking a few more in the fall. could my credit transfer over?

AdmissionLaura:
Since the match is little bit more complicated than just a number, I can't really say 6 out of how many...

FaisalM:
I have taken a couple classes at a community college. Will The credits transfer over?

AdmissionLaura:
Yes - but you won't know if you get credit until you apply, get accepted and then ask the Registrar about transferring credit over

LaganT:
Was it really clear cut? As in those six were clearly best fit?

JairabiancaS:
If because of schedule complications, you ended up in regulars classes and not in honors or AP, would that be still a reasonable excuse?

AdmissionJessica:
you need to explain what the complication was and request a note from your counselor explaining the situation

AdmissionLaura:
And courses taken at a university/community college while in HS can be requested to receive Rice credit...but, again, you have to fill out a request form once you decide to matriculate to Rice

FarahA1:
after i graduate high school, I'll have a total of 61 college credits. . . when I apply will i still be considered as a freshman student?

FarahA1:
i mean do i apply as a freshman or as a transfer?

hoyinlamcolin -> AdmissionLaura:
what are the acceptance rate of Rice students to medical school?

AdmissionLaura:
As long as you haven't graduated from HS and then taken college classes, you're considered a freshman applicant

RyanZ:
Is it possible to enroll in 2 undergraduate degree programs?

AdmissionJessica:
25% of our students double or triple major at Rice

AdmissionLaura:
If you graduate from HS and take more than 9 credits, then you must apply as a transfer

JosephO:
How is Rice's stand on geographical distribution (do you try to accept an equal amounts of students from different regions)? I go to a very competitive high school in the Houston area where many kids apply and attend Rice every year, and there seems to be stigma here that there is a "quota" (that Rice will only accept so many students from any particular school).

HoangH:
I am interested in the Rice/Baylor Medical Program, how would that work with QuestBridge?

AdmissionLaura:
That's one of my favorite Rice myths - that we don't enroll Houstonians

AdmissionJessica:
the Rice/Baylor application is due December 1st and you will need to complete this in addition to the Quest Bridge Application

RyanZ:
What is your opinion of the honor code?

AdmissionLaura:
It's not true...we do NOT have a quota! We look at all students holistically and take the best applicants from the entire pool

JairabiancaS:
So will we still need to do regular application aside from QuestBridge

AdmissionLaura:
As a student - I LOVED the Honor Code

hoyinlamcolin:
what about RD for the Rice/Baylor deadline?

AhmedA1:
i took the following ap classes: ap statistics, ap Calculus AB, AP physics, and AP computer science A. what do you need to get on the collage tests so rice can honor them as college credits

AdmissionLaura:
I could take exams home with me - which was great since I wasn't much of a 'let's take an exam at 9am' type of student

AdmissionJessica:
the Rice/Baylor application is a different application than Quest Bridge and you will need to submit both if you are interested in the Rice/Baylor program

AdmissionLaura:
I needed to wake up more...so I slept in, studied a bit more, and then took exams around 11am

AdmissionJessica:
Even if you're applying Regular Decision you must complete and submit the Rice/Baylor application by December 1st

RyanZ:
haha that sounds exactly like me! how does time work with exams that way?

hoyinlamcolin:
Thnx

AdmissionLaura:
You'll need to make an AP exam score of 4 or 5 to get college credit at Rice

AdmissionJessica:
no problem!

AhmedA1:
thank you

JosephO:
Awesome. Thanks for the reply. Another question: Considering 5s across the board, what AP credits does Rice not accept (or the opposite, whichever is easier to type).

hoyinlamcolin:
what is the percentage of graduates that got accepted to medical school?

hoyinlamcolin:
Rice grads...

AdmissionJessica:
overall, we have a 90% acceptance rate into medical school

AdmissionLaura:
Professors trust you - so they tell you that you have 3 hours to take an exam...closed notes...and you do just that

ReginaL:
wow

BrooksM:
I'm interested in physics . Do you take intended major or interest into consideration when looking at application? How much influence does original research play in your consideration?

hoyinlamcolin:
this is amazing

hoyinlamcolin:
0.9

HoangH:
Would we have to submit a regular Rice Application if we are apply through Regular Decision? I know that Questbridge does not send regular decision applications until after Dec 1.

AdmissionLaura:
Yes...we look at what division a student is applying under when reviewing applications

AdmissionLaura:
But don't worry about choosing a major early...we don't require majors to be declared until second semester sophomore year

AdmissionJessica:
If you're a Quest Scholar you don't have to turn in the Common Application, if you are not, you'll need to submit the Common Application and the Rice Supplement

RyanZ:
What type of student-run community service is available at Rice?

BrooksM:
What divisions are your most popular, and which are most competitive?

AdmissionLaura:
Rice only accepts 4s and 5s on the AP exams

hoyinlamcolin:
what about the percentage of Rice grads who eventually go on to medical school?

UchennaA:
Hello. I have a question about classes that fuse dual credit and AP credits and how those would transfer over to college.

BrandonB:
I had a question similar to one posed earlier. You said many students choose to double or triple major, but what if you wanted to receive more than one degree, such as get your B.M. in Performance and a B.S. in Biology?

LokL:
Are AP test score a significant admissions factor? And would extra AP tests we plan to take our senior year be considered?

AdmissionLaura:
As of last year, about 25% of the graduating class went to medical school...

AdmissionJessica:
you cannot pursue a degree in music and another degree at rice

AdmissionLaura:
No - AP exams are NOT required

UchennaA:
But first I guess I should ask, does Rice accept dual credit classes?

hoyinlamcolin:
thnx

AdmissionAllison:
Hey Ryan - there are lots of options! Thru RSVP (Rice Student Volunteer Program), the residential colleges, cultural and preprofessional clubs, etc

UchennaA:
I mean credits. Does rice accept dual credit credits

OliviaL3:
In order for Rice to accept AP credit, students have to get a 4 or 5 right?

JosephO:
Does the IB Program/IB Diploma hold much weight in Rice Admissions (considering that it is done concurrently with an AP curriculum)?

AdmissionJessica:
there are lots of opportunities for non music majors to continue their interest and participating in music

AdmissionLaura:
But if you take them and get a 4 or 5, they give you credit...the challenge of the course is what we're wanting to see

OliviaL3:
oh ok

AdmissionAllison:
in addition, we have the Center for Civic Engagement, which is a GREAT resource for service learning and activities

AndrewA3:
How are Trustee Scholar recipients determined?

AdmissionLaura:
In general, it's a bit more difficult to get credit for dual credit classes

UchennaA:
But it is possible?

HoangH:
Will taking all honors classes senior year make my schedule more rigorous and place me in contention with other applicants?

AdmissionJessica:
re: trustee scholar recipients--its a holistic process, its part of your application, and it varies from year to year

BrandonH3:
About how many questbridge scholars does Rice usually accept?

RyanZ:
Is anyone allowed to join the RSVP?

AdmissionLaura:
Because we expect applicants to have at least 20 credits of HS classes (English, math, science, social sciences and languages), we will only review dual credits once they exceed those 20 credits...

AdmissionJessica:
we like to see students who've challenged themselves in high school and taken advantage of the higher level classes at their school

AdmissionLaura:
Yes - anyone and everyone can join RSVP...it's a campus wide organization

HoangH:
Does rank take a part in the admissions process?

AdmissionLaura:
Last year we matched with 6 Quest Scholars, but took at least another 50 outside of the match

UchennaA:
Oh, well I am going to have over 20 credits

JairabiancaS:
Do you have AP Exams you don't take? I know some school does.

JairabiancaS:
*don't take for credit

AdmissionLaura:
No - rank is not a part of the admission review - we're more holistic

OliviaL3:
for those 50 outside the match, did they receive adequate financial aid?

UchennaA:
And what about if my class is AP AND Dual credit, but I don't pass the AP exam. Would you accept the dual credit portion of that class?

AdmissionJessica:
after you matriculate as a freshman the registrar will determine which AP classes you will receive credit for

JosephO:
In your opinion, down at the Rice Admissions office, how far is "too far" for an admissions essay?

AdmissionLaura:
Rice guarantees to meet 100% of demonstrated need for all admitted students - so we still pay for everything if you need everything paid for. :)

RyanZ:
I read a little about the ZEROW house that a group of students built. Was that a volunteer project or something else?

AdmissionJessica:
josephO--what do you mean, how far?

AndrewA3:
What percentage of freshman courses are taught by TAs?

RaulD:
How many applications did you received last year, and how many were accepted?

AdmissionJessica:
90% of classes are taught by faculty, 4% by graduate students and 6% by community members

AdalynB:
Hello :) I am a home school student. Are there any home school graduates on campus? Would Rice consider a home school student for a match?

AdmissionLaura:
Yes, there are various community service projects that students participate in

OliviaL3:
how many questbridge applicants (finalists) did you receive

BrooksM:
Which disciplines do you have the most applicants (i.e. physics) and which are the most competitive for admission?

JairabiancaS:
How do you get Rice to pay what you need for if you're not a Quest Bridge Scholar?

AdmissionLaura:
Yes, we will consider all types for QuestBridge

AdmissionJessica:
we received over 11,000 applications and we had a 22% acceptance rate

AdmissionLaura:
You submit a FAFSA, CSS Profile and your tax forms!

AdmissionLaura:
If you've got need, we have the money

JosephO:
For example, to take a commonly heard of example: someone writes an essay on "How I wrote this essay the night before", in response to a prompt on "show how you acted under pressure".

OliviaL3:
how many questbridge applicants (finalists) did you receive at rice?

JosephO:
Not directly answering the prompt, but answering it on a tangent?

KyleL1:
What do the admissions officers look for in an applicant?

AdmissionJessica:
jariabiancaS--i would recommend you enter the financial aid room; however, rice is committed to meeting 100% of your demonstrated need

KyleL1:
what is the defining trait that admission officers look for?

AdmissionLaura:
And if your family makes less than $80,000 a year, Rice will pay for everything and you will not receive loans as a part of your package!

RaulD:
What does Rice looks in the Students; what's the typical Rice student like. Class rank, sat scores community service, volunteer history?

KyleL1:
I'm Kyle by the way, nice to meet all you

AdalynB:
I know that some partner colleges conduct interviews for potential applicants by sending them to local alumni. Does Rice recommend an interview?

AndrewA3:
On average, how many courses can a freshman expect to have someone other than a professor teaching them?

AdmissionJessica:
the admission process is a holistic process and we will look at each piece of your application

OliviaL3:
how many questbridge applicants (finalists) did you receive at rice?

JosephO:
Thanks for answers the questions, I'm going to head over to current students for some campus life info!

AdmissionLaura:
There are no defining traits - every Rice student is unique

HoangH:
Will taking a Senior Project class get me noticed during the admissions process?

AdmissionJessica:
did you challenge yourself academically, were you active at school and in your community, we'll look at you within the context of your school, we want to hear your voice and learn about your interests/personality/point of view in your essays

RyanZ:
What happens if you apply for the college mach program but are not a finalist? Can you still apply to Rice using the Questbridge application?

RaulD:
thank you for answering my questions bye everyone

OliviaL3:
??

AdmissionLaura:
Yes, you can still use the QB application and Rice Supplement to apply to Rice

AdmissionJessica:
we had 6 quest bridge matches and we accepted over 50 quest bridge applicants in regular decision pool

JairabiancaS:
What does Rice think about Gap years?

OliviaL3:
do you know how many applicants?

OliviaL3:
questbridge finalist applicants i mean

AdmissionLaura:
It's hard to say...remember, we read the applications of the students that listed Rice, but if they rank us lower than another school, we won't every match with them...

OliviaL3:
ok

OliviaL3:
thanks

AdmissionJessica:
if you are interested in taking a gap year you are welcome to apply after that

AdalynB:
I know that some partner colleges conduct interviews for potential applicants by sending them to local alumni. Does Rice recommend an interview?

AdmissionLaura:
The match has to go both ways for a student to be placed at Rice.

BrooksM:
What are your most applied for discipline areas? Which are the most competitive, such as physics versus music or computer engineering. What's your acceptance rate for the Wiess School of Natural Sciences, outside of bio or pre-med majors in that school?

HannahW5:
So, when you apply to Rice through QB, if you don't get matched, you can still get accepted as though you had simply applied to Rice without QB?

AdmissionLaura:
If you've never visited campus, it's good to have a sit down with an alumnus to get more information...but it is NOT required

AdmissionJessica:
we don't admit by school, we admit overall and have a 22% acceptance rate. students can change their majors as many times as they want and don't have to declare a major until the second semester of their sophomore year

JairabiancaS:
Will an interview give more appeal to an applicant?

OliviaL3:
can interview give "break" an applicant

RyanZ:
Do to my family’s financial situation, I will most likely be unable to have an on -campus interview, but am still interested in scheduling one with an alumni. Who would be the best person to contact about setting up an off-campus interview?

AdmissionJessica:
you can sign up for interviews in your area on our website

AdmissionLaura:
Yes - if you do not match with any school, Rice will notify the Scholars that they can use their QB application/Rice Supplement as their application to Rice. There will be one additional form so that Scholars can pick either Early or Regular Decision

KyleL1:
Does Rice offer a pre-med program? If not, then what kinds of classes do people generally take?

AdmissionJessica:
we do not have a premed major; however, we have a set of prerequisites students should take to be prepared for medical school and pre-health advisors to work with students throughout their time at rice

OliviaL3:
can interviews be a disadvantage to an applicant?

BrooksM:
If you admit "overall" how do you balance your admissions so that teachers have enough junior and senior year students to teach in specific subject areas?

AdmissionAllison:
PreMed (aka Pre Health Professions) is a series of courses like bio, inorganic chem, organic chem, calculus, physics... it's pretty standard for entry into any medical school

RyanZ:
How does the Mathematics department compare with some of the other partner colleges?

AdmissionLaura:
The off-campus/alumni interview site will be available after Labor Day - so check back on the website!

WesleyC:
will this chat be saved?

WesleyC:
for future reference

HoangH:
Does Rice accept fee waivers for admissions?

AdmissionJessica:
it works itself out because students switch in and out of every division all the time. if the classes are really small and only two students sign up, for example, then you'll have a class with two students

AdmissionLaura:
Yes - it will be saved and posted on the QB website

BrooksM:
what percent of your science students are actively involved in lab research under a faculty advisor?

AdmissionJessica:
yes, rice does accept fee waivers

AdalynB:
what is Rice's student to faculty ratio?

HoangH:
Are there any requirements to apply to Rice?

AdmissionLaura:
Yes - if you are referred to Rice from the QuestBridge program, you will automatically be offered an application fee waiver

HannahW5:
Is there a section on the QB application that deals with National Merit Finalist information? Or is that all handled through Collegeboard?

AdmissionJessica:
not specifically, but overall, in the natural sciences 70% of students have research experience

AdmissionLaura:
5:1 is the ratio, median class size is 14

AdmissionLaura:
I don't understand the question...

JuliaS:
Are Texas residents more likely to be admitted than out-of-state students?

AdmissionJessica:
typically you'll include information about being a national merit finalist in the awards section of the QB application

HannahW5:
Okay, thanks. Sorry about the confusion.

AdmissionLaura:
No - we admit the top applicants from the entire pool - there is no separate application review for in state/out of state applicants

AdalynB:
How many years has Rice been a partner college?

BrooksM:
What are the primary talent areas (academic strengths) of your QB admits?

AdmissionLaura:
We are original partners with QuestBridge. I remember when there were only 5 schools to match with...(WI)

AdmissionJessica:
there's not one thing specific to any of our quest bridge matches

AdalynB:
lol that's really cool

AdmissionLaura:
We've graduated a few years' worth of QuestBridge Scholars already...

RyanZ:
What is your experience with the dorms at Rice?

AdmissionJessica:
we have a residential college system. students are assigned to a college the summer before they matriculate

CliffordM:
When will the next 2 be finished with construction?

AdmissionJessica:
they live, eat, collaborate, etc with students of all years, majors, interests, background, perspectives

DerekF:
are you guaranteed housing all four years?

AdmissionJessica:
you are a member of your college for life

AdmissionJessica:
housing is guaranteed for at least 3 years

HoangH:
Is there anything I can do to improve my application?

AdmissionAllison:
the newest colleges - McMurtry and Duncan - officially opened last week!

DerekF:
what are the pros and cons of applying early decision

BrooksM:
How do you deal with exceptionality and how do you weigh it, comparatively, against other factors? Can you be somewhat specific or give an example, rather than a vague answer that panders to the nondescript?

AdmissionLaura:
There are lots of things you can do to improve your application: be honest in your essays, take the most challenging courses in HS, be nice to the teachers/counselors that write your recommendations

AdalynB:
is there any specific weekend that would be most beneficial to visit Rice on?

AdmissionJessica:
early decision has a slightly higher acceptance rate, you'll receive your financial aid package at the time you're notified, and you'll have less stress at the end of your senior year because you'll know where you're going to college next year!

AdmissionLaura:
And don't forget to keep on top of your deadlines!

AdmissionJessica:
if you aren't sure rice is your number one choice and would like to compare all of the offers you receive, you should apply regular decision

CliffordM:
This might end up being a silly question to ask, but I had an on-campus interview with an interviewer in Lovett Hall, but I had learned later that she no longer works in admissions. Will that affect anything?

AdmissionAllison:
we're not trying to be 'nondescript' - rather, with our highly selective admission process, there are no absolutes. it's a holistic process

AdmissionLaura:
Not really - we allow overnight visits Monday - Thursday nights through out the academic year

AdmissionAllison:
and in that case, everyone has 'exceptions' so to speak

AdmissionJessica:
no, the fact that your interviewer is no longer at rice will not affect your application

GiavannaR:
if you want to have an optional interview, is there any way to do one over the phone or do they have to be in person?

DerekF:
Is the interview required? Or recommended?

AdmissionLaura:
Interviews have to be in person - that's why they're optional

DerekF:
What's the advantage of doing the interview?

AdmissionLaura:
Not required - recommended if you've never visited campus and if you want to get more details about what Rice is like

BrooksM:
How do you choose which college a student lives in or is assigned to.....or would that be a question for another chat room?

HoangH:
Is the ACT with writing required?

RyanZ:
I am interested in submitting additional materials along with my application. Is there any advice you can give me pertaining to this or would you not recommend submitting additional materials at all?

AdmissionJessica:
colleges are assigned randomly and are microcosms of the university as a whole

AdmissionLaura:
The advantage is that you get to find out more about Rice - and hopefully that helps you put together a better application!

AdmissionJessica:
yes, we require ACT with Writing OR SAT plus 2 subject tests

AdamL:
What are your minimum requirements?

AdmissionJessica:
what additional materials are you interesting in submitting?

AdmissionJessica:
we do not have minimum requirements

DerekF:
So if you submit the ACT with writing, the subject tests are not required?

AdmissionLaura:
What kind of 'additional' info are you thinking about submitting?

AdmissionJessica:
write, its either ACT + writing OR SAT + 2 subject tests

BrooksM:
What are the average SAT scores and GPA for your approx 55 QB applicants from last year?

RyanZ:
Well a few AP scores and possibly my extended essay for IB.

hoyinlamcolin:
what if i have ACT with no writing and two SAT subject tests?

BrooksM:
sorry....meant 55 admits.

AdmissionJessica:
no, you have to have ACT + writing or SAT + subject tests, you can't mix ACT plus SAT subject tests

hoyinlamcolin:
ok thnx

AdmissionLaura:
We require an SAT plus 2 Subject Tests OR an ACT with writing...so if you submit an ACT with writing, you're done with the testing!

JuliaS:
Is there a preference for ACT vs. SAT?

AdmissionJessica:
no preference, but we want you to send us all of your scores

JuliaS:
For both tests, or just whichever one we take?

AdmissionJessica:
for all the tests you take

HoangH:
For sending our test scores, do we have to send you a copy of our scores or do we need to ask the test center to send it directly to Rice?

GiavannaR:
if you have a GPA that is not as competitive as others (say, 3.3), would you most likely overlook that if the rest of the application is strong?

DerekF:
Say I took the ACT plus writing and the SAT, but no subject tests, should I still send the SAT scores?

AdmissionJessica:
we have a holistic admission process and will take all of the parts of your application into account when considering you for admission--scores are just a part of that

AdmissionJessica:
yes

AdmissionLaura:
We don't break out the QB applicants from the general numbers - so the answer is: no GPA (many schools don't give it anymore and we don't recalculate), about 2/3 of the admitted students had a class rank and about 74% were in the top 5% of their class, and the middle 50% for admitted students on the tests was 1310-1500 (1600 scale) for the SAT and ACT was 31-34.

AdmissionJessica:
the testing center should send the official scores to us

AdmissionLaura:
send all your scores!

JuliaS:
What scores do you look for on the SAT subject tests?

CliffordM:
When we submit all of our scores, do all of them need to be official from the companies?

AdmissionJessica:
yes, the scores need to be the official scores

HoangH:
Should I send my scores from previous years to show my improvement since then?

AdmissionJessica:
yes, send ALL of your scores

LisaS3:
Does it hurt, help, or not matter if I am from Houston?

AdmissionLaura:
Subject tests are harder to give a middle 50% on...because there are so many tests that students submit!

AdalynB:
Thank you for all of the information and answers. This has been very helpful!

AdmissionJessica:
it doesn't matter if you're from houston or not!

JuliaS:
What about AP scores?

AdmissionJessica:
no problem, Adalyn!

AdmissionJessica:
we accept 4s and 5s on AP tests

LisaS3:
Thanks.

JuliaS:
Do lower scores count against you, or do you just not accept them as credits?

AdmissionJessica:
you will only get credit for 4s or 5s

DerekF:
How many essays are on the application?

AdmissionJessica:
3 essays on the QB application

DerekF:
is the QB application different from the regular Rice application?

JuliaS:
Is that instead of the Common Application?

AdmissionJessica:
yes

NathanielJ:
Do you recommend testing out of subjects APs will allow you to?

DerekF:
What are the differences?

GrahamT:
I go to a private school in Wash DC and work very hard. My scores the first time through were not great because I spend most my time studying, playing sports, and church. My friends take test prep classes that we can not afford. I have studied a book on my own this summer, but I'm not sure a miracle is in the works. Any encouragement?

AdmissionJessica:
your test scores are only a piece of your application, we have a holistic process and consider your life experiences, essays, classes you've taken, activities you're involved in, etc etc

AdmissionAllison:
it depends - if you want pre health professions or the hard sciences, most profs would STRONGLY advise against it

AdmissionAllison:
but in other areas, it matters less

LisaS3:
Is it better to be involved in one or two EC's with have leadership positions and a few state awards that require a lot of after school time, like debate, or is it better to have four or five positions in EC's that don't (i.e. National Honor Society)?

CliffordM:
Say someone isn't matched with Rice through QB, but Rice is absolutely their first choice, so they request to have it turned into an Early Decision application. Does that offer any sort of real advantage, seeing as how they weren't matched the first time?

NathanielJ:
Do the scores help the admissions officers at all during the admissions process?

AdmissionJessica:
we want to see everything you're involved in, the role you play and your perspectives, its not better or worse to be involved in more extracurricular activities or state awards

AdmissionAllison:
the advantage is in applying ED - we have a higher admit rate for ED (34%), not matching doesn't really come into the equation. you'll just be a normal ED student!

AdmissionJessica:
all of the pieces of your application are considered in the application process

DerekF:
What is the difference applying through the QB application and the Common application with the Rice supplement?

LisaS3:
Thanks!

BrooksM:
If a student has a handicap, but is otherwise a solid candidate, is it wise to disclose the handicap on the admissions application? I'm concerned about not being viewed as one of the "best and the brightest" and know I can stand on my own. Would it help to disclose this upfront if it's not otherwise needed?

AdmissionAllison:
the QB app is soooo much more in-depth than the CommApp - we looove the QB app

CliffordM:
So is QB pretty much just like applying through ED, just through a different process?

AdmissionJessica:
tell us about whatever you want to tell us about! if its important to you, then share it, if its not then don't include it

AdmissionAllison:
the extra essays, cool short answer questions... good stuff!

AdmissionLaura:
It's similar to Early in that the decision is binding (for all but 3 partner schools), but if you really only want one school - really and truly - you should probably apply Early Decision to that school.

DerekF:
Okay. So would it be an advantage to apply through the QB college match program/application?

GrahamT:
Can you assign rough percentages, or at least rank in importance the following, in the app process at Rice: school reputation, grades, scores, activities, essays

hoyinlamcolin:
so for rice is a separate teacher rec required or you use the teacher recs from the QB app?

AdmissionLaura:
The advantage is if you like several schools equally - i.e., have no preference - then you can rank several schools and match with one and get a guaranteed scholarship

JuliaS:
And that's binding?

AdmissionJessica:
no, i cannot give rough percentages

AdmissionJessica:
there aren't any

AdmissionLaura:
We use the teacher recs (and school recs) from the QB application - no other recommendations are required

AdmissionAllison:
could you clarify your question?

AdmissionAllison:
:-)

JuliaS:
The QB application, that's binding?

BrooksM:
If not admitted as an early QB applicant, but submit the common application in October, is my "regular application" (i.e. not early decision application) paperwork sidelined until all the early action people are admitted, or is it screened before the regular paperwork deadline?

AdmissionAllison:
If you go through the entire match process, then yes (except for 5 of the partners that don't have binding match decisions)

NathanielJ:
What sort of things do you most want to know about applying students? I know you want to see as much of our personality etc as possible, but what do you feel most effectively demonstrates who we are.

GiavannaR:
When is the best time to visit Rice in October? and while there, can you stay on campus or attend a class?

AdmissionJessica:
we want to see everything--classes you've taken, activities you're involved in, perspective, life experiences, recommendations

AdmissionAllison:
if you don't match, then you choose whether you want to apply ED (binding) to Rice or another school. If you go Regular decision, then it's not binding

NathanielJ:
Does Rice offer a program for discounted travel to the school?

RyanZ:
I have not yet taken my SAT subject tests but plan to do so in October. What impact do you think my lack of scores in this section will have on my college match application?

AdmissionJessica:
you can sign up for an overnight visit on our website after september 9th, don't visit during fall recess (you can look at our calendar on the rice website)

DerekF:
The QB app is due september 30th right? And it's not specifically for Rice, but rather for all of QBs schools.

AdmissionLaura:
If you're a Scholar and not matched with Rice (or the other schools you list for QB), then you will be notified that your QB application can be considered for Early of Regular Decision to Rice if you fill out one more form. It's one page and you check a box and sign it.

JuliaS:
The matching part confuses me; are you only matched to one school, so you don't have a choice?

JudeG:
what do you want to see in candidates for the Rice Baylor program

NathanielJ:
Thanks Jessica and Laura

AdmissionJessica:
if you take your SAT subject tests by october you'll be fine, you wont be considered if you haven't taken them by then

AdmissionJessica:
yes, the QB application is due september 30th

AdmissionLaura:
Yes - you're only matched to ONE school - and it's binding. So only list schools that you would definitely attend. The QB scholarship doesn't follow you around...

hoyinlamcolin:
QB recommendation requires core subject teachers; how do you define core subjects? can you also allow mentors to be considered for recommendations?

DerekF:
What if we take the subject tests October 10th, which is the next testing date? Will we be okay for deadlines?

CliffordM:
I appreciate all of the help!

AdmissionJessica:
core subjects--english, math, science, history, languages

AdmissionAllison:
interesting question - WE are not reviewing RBMSP applicants, Baylor College of Medicine makes that call. However, we do firsts review all candidates for admission to Rice and we only pass admitted students on to Baylor for review for the RBMSP review

AdmissionJessica:
yes, october 10th is fine

LisaS3:
Do you know the middle 50% score for the ACT essay score? What's the range that most accepted students get on the essay section?

AdmissionJessica:
you can include a recommendation from a mentor as a supplemental recommendation

GrahamT:
If I do not get a QB match at Rice, convert to ED, am accepted, it's binding--correct? Then what if my parents can't afford the amount after financial aid makes its best offer?

JuliaS:
If I'm not sure that I'd be matched with Rice, shouldn't I do the Common App instead of the QB application?

hoyinlamcolin:
thnx for your help

DerekF:
If we apply the QB college match program, and aren't matched with a school, will our app still be sent to rice? Or do we need to then go back and fill out the common application?

AdmissionAllison:
the mid 50% of admitted students had a 31-34 composite ACT

GiavannaR:
if rice is your top choice and none of the other partner colleges are of interest, it would be wise to apply only to rice through questbridge, correct? and the apply reg decision to other schools?

DerekF:
Also, when do we find out the matched results for the QB app?

AdmissionLaura:
Then - and only then - can you ask to be released from the binding part of ED and you can apply and go to another school.

AdmissionJessica:
if you're applying to QB and you're a QB scholar you shouldn't fill out the common application

DerekF:
what if you aren't a qb scholar?

GiavannaR:
thank you!

JudeG:
do i stand a chance with a 2150 sat score

AdmissionJessica:
you will be notified by QB by october 23rd

RyanZ:
Are students encouraged to study abroad for a term or year?

AdmissionAllison:
if you're not a QB finalist, then you can still request to have your QB app forwarded to Rice. You'll also need to send in our QB Rice supplement

AdmissionLaura:
The calendar is on the QuestBridge website, but the applicants are notified if they become Scholars by the end of October

AdmissionAllison:
ABSOLUTELY! :-D

LokL:
what is the acceptance ba/md program?

BrooksM:
Does it help to submit my regular application paperwork early, i.e. before the deadline, or do they wait and become considered as regular applications, only after the regular application deadline passes?

LokL:
acceptance rate*

JuliaS:
So if you apply using QB and you don't get matched, you can still try to apply to Rice early or regular decision?

AdmissionJessica:
yes, you can still apply to rice if you aren't matched with QB

AdmissionLaura:
The Rice/Baylor MSP accepts 15-18 students total to get ~ 14 to matriculate to the program every year.

DerekF:
When is the early decision application deadline?

AdmissionJessica:
early decision deadline is november 1st

JudeG:
thanks!!

LokL:
And how many applied to the Rice/Baylor MSP last year?

DerekF:
So, if we don't find out from QB until October 23rd, should we wait to submit the early decision app until we find out if we are matched? Or should we just submit it as soon as possible

AdmissionJessica:
400+ applied for Rice/Baylor, 50 were interviewed and 14 received a spot in the program

AdmissionAllison:
no, we read all the RD applications after the deadline (remember, we'll be reading QB and ED apps in the fall!). but sending stuff in early means it's off your plate, which feels pretty good from your perspective :o)

JudeG:
Is the cut off for the PSAT announced

AdmissionJessica:
you'll be notified by college board if you're a national merit finalist

HoangH:
Would Senior Project help me get noticed during the Admissions process?

AdmissionJessica:
we definitely want to hear about your senior project

LokL:
Is I am apply to the Rice/Baylor program and I am sending in a art supplement is my application still due Dec. 1st?

AdmissionLaura:
That's up to you - since the QB application is a bit more intensive, you can possibly use some of that same information to fill out the Common App for other schools

JuliaS:
Can you apply to Rice using QB and to other schools using the Common App?

AdmissionJessica:
yes, you need to submit your rice/baylor program by december 1st

JudeG:
how many kids every year apply to med school and how many get in.

AdmissionLaura:
Yes - everything must be submitted for Rice and the Rice/Baylor MSP by December 1

AdmissionJessica:
we have a 90% acceptance rate to medical school

AdmissionJessica:
yes, juliaS, you can use the QB app for rice and common app for other schools

RyanZ:
Does Rice accept IB credit?

AdmissionLaura:
And approximately 25% of the seniors this year are going to medical school

AdmissionLaura:
Yes - HL scores of 6 and 7 are accepted for college credit

JuliaS:
If you apply to more than one school using QB, will you only be matched to one?

JudeG:
how many come in as freshman to do premed

AdmissionJessica:
yes, if you apply to more than one school using QB you're only matched with one

DerekF:
What if you are matched to a school with QB, but then decide to not attend that school? Are you going to be forced to go to that school?

LokL:
If I am unable to visit Rice because of financial reasons, what is the next best thing I can do to get to know more about the Rice campus, culture, etc..?

AdmissionJessica:
the QB match is binding except for five schools

JudeG:
which are they

NamT:
Do you know how many students from Questbridge will be matched with Rice this year?

AdmissionLaura:
Lots - don't know the exact number come in as pre-med, but about 40% of this years' freshman class has self-identified as pre-med

JuliaS:
Do you know where I can find info on which five schools are not binding?

AdmissionJessica:
LokL--there's a virtual tour on campus, you can email the admission office to request to email a current student AND you can go into the student chat room now and chat with current students

AdmissionLaura:
Don't know - you need to check out the QuestBridge website. All I know is that we are binding...

AdmissionJessica:
on the QB website

RyanZ:
Are individual partner schools able to see the other schools that I apply to?

AdmissionJessica:
no, individual schools do not see other schools you apply to

JudeG:
Yale Stanford Notre Dame are non binding

AdmissionLaura:
Not yet, but at least 6 (like this year)

JuliaS:
Thanks.

NamT:
So the number will be higher for sure?

AdmissionLaura:
Go to the QuestBridge site for more info on non-binding schools

AdmissionJessica:
not necessarily

AdmissionJessica:
the number wont necessarily be higher

BrooksM:
I hear one of you is a good actor and performed very well at a play last year....so your reputation proceeds you. Thank you both for your help....your job must be almost as hard as being a high school senior, and that's not an easy task! Thanks for helping us get to wherever we are going.

AdmissionLaura:
Not necessarily - might be 6 again this year...

JudeG:
I really want to come to Rice because I live in Houston and I love Houston.

AdmissionJessica:
wonderful!

AdmissionLaura:
Thanks for the praise - and good luck with your applications this fall! And don't forget to have fun this semester!

HieuL:
What do you feel about reading the app+essay nonstop for weeks

AdmissionAllison:
how do we feel....

HieuL:
yeah!

AdmissionAllison:
it's pretty insane but it's truly amazing to learn so much about everyone who applies

HieuL:
it's the god job

HieuL:
i think

AdmissionLaura:
Reading applications is our favorite part of the year! It's where we get to know you!

JudeG:
I would like to attend Rice, because it is a private school. Are there good apartments for seniors

AdmissionLaura:
There's only so many peanuts you can eat on a flight...(WI)

AdmissionJessica:
there are no apartments for seniors, we have a residential college system and freshman through seniors live together in the colleges

JudeG:
How are the dorms

AdmissionJessica:
JudeG--you should go into the student chat room and talk to the students. each college is different!

LokL:
I'm considering taking an online class. So are online classes looked down upon or are they considered equal to traditional classes?

AdmissionJessica:
that depends on the course

LokL:
What do you mean by depends on the course?

JuliaS:
From what I understand, the QB application can be submitted through the Match Program or forwarded for Regular Decision. Do you have a preference either way? And is the Regular Decision application binding?

AdmissionJessica:
is it an english/math/science/history course or is it a health class?

LokL:
Oh it's a math course that isn't offered at my school

NamT:
What is the aspect that admission officers put most weight upon? For example, GPA, test scores, essays, etc?

AdmissionJessica:
then, that sounds okay, it shows you want to take charge of your academics in high school and challenge yourself

AdmissionAllison:
Well, if you are a finalist and go through the match process, we'll get your app from QB. If you aren't matched, then you can choose to have your QB app forwarded through the "my locker" part of the QB site. You'll also need to submit the QB Rice Supplement. But if you don't make finalist status, then you'll need to apply using the CommonApp and the CA Rice Supplement

AdmissionAllison:
Regular decision IS NOT binding! :o)

AdmissionLaura:
We look at all parts of the application holistically - so not one area is emphasized over another section

JuliaS:
Thank you so much for all of your help!

AdmissionLaura:
We don't 'weigh' any part over another

AdmissionAllison:
our pleasure!! :o)

GrahamT:
Will Rice be visiting the DC area in the Fall? It is always so helpful for me to stand and talk to a rep about the school. I'm bummed I couldn't get there to visit this summer.

AdmissionJessica:
yes, we will be in DC at some point this fall

AdmissionJessica:
you can also schedule an alumni interview in DC and meet with an alumnus

GiavannaR:
Rice requires you to send your first quarter grades or first semester grades of your senior year?

NamT:
I heard that some schools offer the same financial package for matched students and those accepted through regular decision, is this the case for Rice?

AdmissionJessica:
first semester grades

AdmissionLaura:
Yes - we guarantee to meet 100% of demonstrated financial need for all admitted students

JudeG:
I would like to live in the dorm

JuliaS:
If I apply using QB, can I also apply to another school early action, and just cancel that application in I get matched?

JuliaS:
...in = if

AdmissionJessica:
we have residential colleges, which are fabulous--you can talk to students in the students room about them

AdmissionLaura:
Yes - you can do that

JudeG:
what is the procedure

GrahamT:
Yeah, my sister applied to Rice two years ago, interviewed with 2-3 guys here in DC and I think has kept in touch with them since--they were sooo friendly and helpful. I don't know whether they put a word in for her at Rice or not.

AdmissionLaura:
for...what, exactly?

LokL:
If I'm taking an online course that started in July and will end in October, how should I put that down on the common application? should I just list it as a first semester course?

AdmissionJessica:
that's great, Graham!

JudeG:
I would like to live in the dorm

AdmissionAllison:
EVERY student at Rice is assigned to one of our 11 residential colleges

AdmissionAllison:
and guaranteed on-campus housing freshman year

HoangH:
Would Rice prefer it if I took a World History Honors course or Senior Project?

AdmissionJessica:
yes, list it as a first semester course

JudeG:
Do you have a program where we can visit and live in the dorm before applying to Rice

AdmissionLaura:
What is more challenging? We want students to take the most challenging courses available to them.

AdmissionAllison:
if you come visit campus, then you can spend the night with a student, attend class, etc.

HoangH:
Okay, thanks!

AdmissionLaura:
If your senior project is about a non-academic subject, then I recommend the History course

AdmissionAllison:
sign up for a visit online @ www.rice.edu

AngelaW:
For students who are at a financially unable to fund their trip, do you have any type of program that helps pay for some of the travel cost?

WesleyC:
would rice be a good choice for one who wants to do engineering/physics in college?

WesleyC:
or is it stronger in premed

JudeG:
Thanks for all the help!!

GrahamT:
Thank you for setting up this chat--and taking the time to answer questions--it's very helpful and most schools don't take the time to do it.

AdmissionAllison:
Rice can be a great choice for students who want to pursue any/all of those areas

AdmissionLaura:
For students that have applied to Rice, we have several opportunities in the spring where we offer flight reimbursement to visit campus.

AdmissionAllison:
"better" is a relative term. you would definitely be challenged and learn tons as a physics/engineering student... as well as if you wanted to study history or philosophy or anything else here

AdmissionLaura:
There's no application for these 'fly-ins' other than the Rice application, so just make sure you fill out your forms completely!

TravisC:
Hi! I know Rice is a great institution, but to many people I know it seems very science oriented. How strong are programs in Political Science or Philosophy?

WesleyC:
for the essays, would it be better to write personally, or professionally?

AdmissionAllison:
premed' is simply a set of prerequisite courses that medical schools require... and yes, we do have very good preprofessional advising in that area as well as rigorous coursework in those prereqs. we average a 90% acceptance rate for our seniors who apply to med school

AdmissionLaura:
Personal - I can see what you DO on your application. I want to know who you are on the essays

hoyinlamcolin:
does Rice have a Questbridge College visit program ?

DeniseN:
When does Vision weekend occur and how can i apply for it?

AdmissionAllison:
both programs have excellent reputations! PoliSci is a larger program (more students choose to major in it) but philosophy is pretty amazing. it's really about what YOU want to study and are passionate about (as well as what you will choose to take advantage of)

AdmissionJessica:
no, unfortunately, we dont have a QB visit. we do have programs in the spring for students to visit campus though

AdmissionLaura:
Vision is usually held in mid-February and there is no application for the program - it's an invitation only fly-in for students that have applied to Rice

WesleyC:
"who you are" = personality, personal characteristics, i.e. determined, came from unresponsible family, ambitious, organized?

HoangH:
What do you consider a non-academic subject for senior project?

RyanZ:
How is the Mathematics department at Rice?

AdmissionJessica:
yes, wesley. we want to know who you are--your perspectives, life experiences, interests, sense of humor

AdmissionJessica:
we have a strong math department and you can learn more about what faculty are doing by visiting their website

DeniseN:
oh. are there any other fly ins? since i recently heard of rice and know very little about it; i want to visit to see if i want to apply or not. i'm from california and sadly, i've haven't heard of many texan universities

WesleyC:
Thanks! And would I do that by telling a story through the essays?

AdmissionLaura:
If it's not an English, Math, Science, History or Language class, it's probably not going to be considered an academic subject. (i.e. - we don't count health, band, drivers ed, yearbook as academic subjects)

AdmissionJessica:
there are various fly ins for other scholarships, etc, for admitted students

AdmissionJessica:
you can also request an alumni interview in your area and meet with an alumnus to learn more about their rice experience

AngelaW:
If you are not sure on what you would like to major in during the application process, is it fine to check more than one subject area on the Rice Supplement despite it not being in the same school?

WesleyC:
For example, I'm writing the 2nd QB essay (intellectual prompt) on a science program. Would it be a good idea to tell a story that explains how I grew from the program, what I learned, how my perspective of science changed, etc. ?

AdmissionLaura:
You can tell a story - preferably something that pertains to you - or you can describe yourself. Just make sure it lets me know about YOU in YOUR OWN words.

RyanZ:
Would it be wise or unwise to write about a story in which we took a risk and failed, but learned something from it?

HoangH:
Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it!

AdmissionAllison:
hi ravalip!

AdmissionLaura:
Yes, you can check lots of 'majors' on the application, but you need to apply under only ONE school/division. So apply to your strengths. If you look like a scientist, don't apply under the Humanities...

AdmissionLaura:
That's actually a good subject to tackle

AdmissionLaura:
You can write about lots of different aspects of yourself with that subject

RyanZ:
And I wont be looked at negatively for my failure?

GrahamT:
Are any of you from Ukraine?

RavaliP:
what if we would like to double major in majors that are in different schools? how can we decide which school to apply to?

AdmissionLaura:
Not at all! It can show perseverance and different aspects of your personality - it doesn't have to be a 'negative' thing

AdmissionAllison:
ummm, none of us are Ukrainian... don't hold it against us!

RyanZ:
That's good to know, thank you :)

AdmissionJessica:
you can indicate an interest in more than one school on your application

WesleyC:
If one is applying on a math/science basis and is not particularly a strong writer, how should one approach the essay? By writing simply and honestly about their math/science interests?

WesleyC:
I mean, if I'm not that good of a writer, would it be a good idea to write a simple yet honest story that shows my personality

AdmissionAllison:
BUT you do need to choose ONE to which you are actually applying in our process. Again, think about your strengths and apply in that school.

AdmissionLaura:
Sure - write what you know! You should be playing to your strengths on your applications - so tell us about why you like the maths/sciences, let us know what you think you want to do with the knowledge you'll gain in college - just be yourself!

AdmissionAllison:
You can always change your mind or double major after you're admitted and arrive on campus :o)

GrahamT:
The Rice rep from Ukraine came to DC. Know anything about the rowing team?

AdmissionLaura:
Definitely don't write what you think an admission officer wants to read on ANY of your applications. Trust me...we can tell when you're pretending. (WI)

AdmissionJessica:
graham, you should talk to the students in the student chat team about rowing and other activities on campus!

NamT:
Will there be another chat session in the future like this one?

AdmissionAllison:
FYI - we

AdmissionLaura:
All I know is that the crew team wakes up really early to row in Clear Lake!

AdmissionAllison:
oops - we'll be shutting down in a few minutes...... :-(

NamT:
do you know if there will be another chat session?

NamT:
it has been really helpful and i wish we could get more time

AdmissionJessica:
there wont be an official QB chat session, but we'll be having others later in the fall. you can also contact us in the admission office if you have questions

NamT:
ok

NamT:
Well, I have to go now. Thank you everyone for your help today. I will definitely apply to Rice.

AdmissionLaura:
Any last minute questions that you MUST have answered?!?

hoyinlamcolin:
THANK YOU! This surely is a helpful and stimulating session.

AdmissionAllison:
terrific! we'll look forward to your application :o)

RyanZ:
How do we let the applications committee know that our ECs are not just application padding but are things that we are genuinely interested in?

AdmissionLaura:
You're welcome! The transcripts will be posted on the QB site, too, so keep an eye out for an email!

HoangH:
Thanks for taking your time out to chat with us!

RavaliP:
thank you!

RamseyP:
thank you

AdmissionLaura:
If you show continued interest in an EC, then that should be enough to demonstrate your sincerity...if not, then write an essay! (WI)

RyanZ:
Thank you for all of the help and advice! I will look for the transcripts soon :)

AdmissionLaura:
Of course! Now go do your homework!

AdmissionAllison:
Hopefully, they'll be on the QB site next week... keep your fingers crossed

RavaliP:
I'm a student that has been to three different high school and have had different activities at each, i feel the common app EC section will not serve me sufficiently, what should i do?

AdmissionLaura:
That's what the 'additional section' part of the application is for! Or attach a resume that lets us know what you've done (and where)!

RamseyP:
What are the minimum SAT and ACT scores I need to score in order to be considered for admission?

RavaliP:
oh, ok!

AdmissionJessica:
there are no minimum scores

RamseyP:
oh ok

AdmissionJessica:
adios everyone, good luck with your senior year!

AdmissionLaura:
OK, y'all - we need to shut down!

AdmissionLaura:
Remember that the transcripts will be posted on the QB site, so you can see what we talked about before and after you logged in!

AdmissionLaura:
Thanks for coming!

RavaliP:
thank you for all your help!
