Striving for success and preparing for the worst, Ya Chang has persevered through many obstacles. Along the way, he has gained many life-enriching experiences that will stay with him. Inspired by the first economic book he picked up called “Principle of Economics” by Harvard’s own Dr. Gregory Mankiw, Ya Chang pursues his interests as an active participant in his school’s FBLA, Mathletes, and CSF. His leadership in these organizations has led to successful fundraising and community service efforts. Ya has an unwavering passion to help others, a life goal which he realized through his own personal experiences. He is involved in his local playground steering committee and acts as the sole Region 3 Catalyst in the service-learning initiative called the Catalyst program. To relax, Ya enjoys playing basketball and listens to a myriad of music. He attributes his success to the support of his family and plans to dedicate his life to philanthropy.
Naturally curious and passionately motivated, Matan Orgel confronts all obstacles and challenges with a smile on his face. Matan spends a significant amount of time volunteering; as President of the Science National Honor Society, he works diligently to promote community service and scientific exploration. He believes that good intentions are not sufficient to make an impact on the world, and so follows through with actions that make a difference in other people’s lives. Matan has an outgoing and fiercely independent personality, which is coupled with an undeniable openness and honesty. Matan supplements his rigorous course load with classes at the Florida International University and Florida Virtual School where he participates in online courses. Meanwhile, he always finds time to relax with friends who know him as a fun loving guy. Though he loves mathematics and science, Matan is open to other career options that he may come across in the future.
Nathan Overmeyer is an extraordinarily dedicated, hardworking young man who reaches his fullest potential in everything that he undertakes. Aware that he is so privileged to have been granted the scholarships and aid necessary to attend a private college preparatory school, he has striven and succeeded in the most challenging coursework his school has to offer, while also being an active member of his school community. Nathan is a member of the National Honor Society and his school's Corps of Cadets; he has been selected to serve in the Corps' top position of Battalion Commander during his senior year. Extracurricularly, he participates in cross-country, lacrosse, and swimming, but is usually reluctant to speak of his love of playing the violin. As a member of the Community Service Corps and Interact Club, Nathan volunteers in several projects designed to assist in filling the community needs of underprivileged, deserving recipients. Additionally, he was selected by the faculty to be involved in TMI's Priceless People Program, in which he mentors elementary school youngsters in need of exemplary role models. With the support of his family and teachers, Nathan works diligently to prepare to accomplish his goals in life, all of which exemplify what it means to be a true servant leader. Ever since Phillip Bauman was a boy, he has had an insatiable love for cars. He still remembers the very first time he laid his eyes on a Viper GTS when he was six years old. As he grew up, his love matured and began to encompass a passion for motor sports racing. He entertains the idea of becoming a professional race driver, a desire he nurtures by taking classes and attending events that further his understanding of the field. He hopes to lay a foundation for his interest by pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering in hopes of one day creating a hydrogen fuel car competent for the race track. Phillip is known by his friends and family as a driven person who stops at nothing to achieve his goals. And while some may question his choice of occupation, Phillip has never let those comments hamper his progress. He plans to do some big things with his life and as he sees it, nothing foreseeable can stop him. Summer Program: African American Scholars at Notre Dame
Summer Program: African American Scholars at Notre Dame Allen Jilo was born in the United States but lived in the rural Kenyan highlands until he was twelve. Learning in Kenya was strict, consisting of rote memorization and whacks with a cane if one made a mistake (or if the teacher was having a bad day). But it was more than compensated by the fabulous climate and memories of catching chameleons and other reptiles every day, an activity that inspired him to become a herpetologist when he was young. In contrast, the prestigious schools of Ithaca, New York, are coupled with inclement weather for the majority of the year. Nevertheless, Allen continues to excel in all subjects, particularly in math and science. Among his teachers, he is well known for his easy going personality, emotional maturity, and intellectual ability, which he uses to help fellow students understand complex concepts. Among his friends, he is admired for his shrewd poker skills and wild 70’s- style Afro. He has yet to make any firm decisions about his career goals, but he’s confident that he’s going to figure that out sooner than later. Summer Program: African American Scholars at Notre Dame Name: Anthony Magden Anthony Magden’s creative and original approach to life drives his interests in many fields. He is a sponge of information and entertainingly informs his teachers and classmates of interesting facts and tidbits of trivia. (“Did you know that the elephant is the only mammal that can’t jump?” he asks.) Anthony constantly seeks to increase his pool of knowledge to maintain his role as a reliable dispenser of data. When he’s not researching obscure facts on the web, he is tutoring his fellow classmates or participating in fundraisers to aid orphans in Guatemala. On other days, you can find him on the basketball court or reading the most recent suspense novels. Summer Program: Stanford’s High School Summer College Through life’s difficulties, Nicole Gaetjens has never lost her drive or her smile. Honest, conscientious, and filled with enthusiasm, Nicole believes that there is nothing more beneficial to a person and society than knowing that someone cares, and that even making a difference to a few will send a huge impact to many. She puts this credo into action as current President of the Leo Club and strives to increase involvement within her school and island community. As a freshman, she initiated a school-wide recycling project; she also organized regular visits to long-term care facilities for the elderly. Nicole's greatest achievement and most valued commitment rests in her school's Mock Trial Team, of which she is co-captain. As perennial state champions, the team taught Nicole that, with determination, anything can be achieved. Mock Trial also inspired Nicole's passion for trial advocacy. She has faith in the American legal system's ability to bring justice, and currently strives to be an instrument for that justice. However, Nicole is still exploring other career options in the humanitarian and psychology fields. Nicole never has a dull moment because she always finds time to do what she loves, whether it's hiking with the Nature Club or leading a bon dance for the Japanese Club. No matter what Nicole decides to do, she is certain it will involve personal interaction.
Summer Program: Yale Summer Session At first glance, Isabel Juarez may seem quiet and reserved, but beneath that exterior is a joyful and passionate disposition. For the first 15 years of her life, she lived in Guatemala, a small, tropical, third-world country affected by corruption and poverty. A recent immigrant to America, Isabel tries to adjust as best as she can to the changes of living in Chicago. Her experience thus far have opened her eyes to current issues around the world and awakened latent talents she never imagined she possessed. Empowered, trying new things has become a favorite hobby. In such a short amount of time, Isabel has risen as a leader among her peers in Academic Decathlon and Building with Books, a non-profit organization that builds schools in third-world countries. However, she has found her passion - for arguing, in Debate. Analyzing problems and searching for their solutions have become second nature to Isabel, a far cry from her Guatemalan days when public speaking made her feel dizzy and government talk made her yawn. After feeling so powerless in face of all her country’s problems, she now realizes that change is possible. A fervent reader who questions everything, Isabel has great - but realistic expectations for both her and her country’s future. Her strong resolve and her passion for learning drive her to make a difference wherever she goes.
