Yale University Match Scholarship

For high school students applying to the National College Match in 2007

At Yale College, the parent contribution is $0 for families with a total income less than $45,000.

Yale College awards all financial aid solely on the basis of need. Need is the difference between the estimated cost of attendance and the expected family contribution. The first portion of a student's award is self-help, which is a combination of student loans and academic year earnings. Yale gives the students the freedom to choose the distribution of self-help.

We consider a student's eligibility for other financial aid, including the Federal Pell Grant, the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG), the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG), state grants, and gift aid from parents' employers, etc. The University will then fund any remaining financial need with Yale Scholarship.

Yale's need-based financial aid is renewed every year through the same application process. If there is no change in your family's financial situation, there is no reason to expect a change in your financial aid package.

**Student Self-Help
Self-help is the first portion of every student's need-based financial aid award and consists of a term-time job and a student loan.

Students are free to use any combination of loans and term-time employment to meet this expected contribution; and the relatively modest student effort contribution - modest relative to Yale's total costs and relative to what most other colleges and universities in the U.S. expect - means that Yale students, even if they choose to borrow, should graduate with manageable levels of indebtedness.

The figures above for Federal Work-Study and Student Loans are estimates based on average student schedules.

Outside Scholarships
Outside scholarships may be used to reduce a student's loan and work-study contributions. If total scholarships exceed $4,400, students can request to replace the summer work contribution of $1,850. If total outside scholarships exceed $6,250 students may ask the donor organization(s) for a deferment to subsequent academic years. Outside scholarships in excess of $6,250 that are not deferred will reduce the Yale Scholarship.

Other Details
Students are expected to contribute 25% of their personal savings toward college expenses. This contribution will decrease the amount of the Yale grant dollar for dollar.

The travel allowance is determined by Yale and will vary depending on student location. Changes to the travel allowance will affect the Yale grant.
