Williams College: Tyng Scholarship

For high school students applying to the National College Match in 2009

Scholarship Details

The Stephen H. Tyng Scholarship was established in 1940 through the bequest of Mrs. Juliet Tyng, in memory of both her husband and son. These scholarships are the most distinctive and prestigious awards presented each year to six to eight of the most promising scholars in the first-year class.

Tyng Scholar aid packages are designed to meet a student's demonstrated need, primarily with scholarship assistance, for each year at Williams. Further assistance is available for up to three years of graduate or professional school or the equivalent of summer study or research at the graduate level. Since all applicants who qualify for aid are considered as candidates for the Tyng, no additional application is required.

Summer Internships: Tyng Scholars are highly encouraged to pursue special internship, research or study opportunities for all three of their undergraduate summers (commencing after freshman year) funded with Tyng Scholarship support. A stipend of $3,200 is available for one summer, and full scholarship replacement of the Tyng summer earnings expectation of $1,300 for the other two summers.

Graduate School: Tyng Scholarships for graduate/professional school are also based on need. Up to three years (6 semesters) of assistance is available (no more than $150,000.00). Depending on individual circumstances, 6 semesters may be exchanged for 6 summers. These funds can be used for any type of professional or graduate school program, such as medical school, law school, or research opportunities.

The dollar amount of the Tyng Scholarship is based on need. It is not a full, four-year scholarship like the College Match. Your financial aid package will be reviewed on an annual basis - this means that during one or more years of your undergraduate study, you may have a parental contribution.

Of important note for Tyng Scholars:

  • There is no required work-study
  • Aid applications will be reviewed every year. This means that your financial aid package will vary from year to year, costs will increase, and family contributions will change.
  • Students are expected to contribute 25% of their personal savings and investments each year.
